Tuvalu is one of Taiwan's three remaining Pacific allies, after Nauru earlier this month severed ties with the self-ruled island in favor of mainland China. Natano, who took office in 2019, had pledged Tuvalu's continuing support for Taiwan during his visit there in 2022.

Incumbent finance minister Seve Paeniu, a possible leadership contender who has expressed eagerness to review Tuvalu's relations with Taiwan, was reelected unopposed on Friday. The South Pacific country has maintained diplomatic ties with Taiwan since 1979.
