Toyota is not really into EVs. Its best EV is the bZ4X, I think and it cannot compete with the Chinese EVs in terms of distance and charging speed.
That's why it spent more on hydrogen cars. But that arena is competitive. South Korea is a main competitor but China is almost level with it now in this technology. US and Germany are also key players.

A CNA report that says something positive about Made-in-China, which is seldom seen in English-language media.
STRONG BRANDING
The growing recognition of Chinese brands overall has also helped catapult BYD to its recent popularity. Long gone are the days where “made-in-China” is seen as second best. But this brand equity was not built up overnight, said Mr Yoong. “Your iPhones, your DJI drones, your MacBooks, they’re all made in China, and made in China is starting to be recognised as quality over time,” he said. “BYD has done a good job in crossing a very tough hurdle of getting the brand not just recognition, but also trust,” he added.

I read EV not as popular in Japan due to lack of charging station. So I am surprised BYD actually do better than Toyota's EV in their own home ground !
What is more shocking is BYD only enter the Jap market just 19 months ago.

BYD test "Design-for-Japan" micro-compact EV for elders in Nippon land...I am curious will the EV be made in Nanjing to remind the Jap's WW2 History.
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is preparing to challenge Japan’s tightly held mini-vehicle market with a bold new contender: a fully electric kei car engineered specifically for Japanese roads. Recently leaked spy photos reveal a compact prototype that is being tested. It features hallmark design elements like sliding rear doors and a dual A-pillar layout, indicating strict adherence to Japan’s kei car regulations.
