YANGON (AFP): Myanmar marked one month since suffering its fiercest earthquake in more than a century on Monday, with military bombardments unabated despite a humanitarian truce as thousands of survivors camp in makeshift shelters. The magnitude-7.7 tremor was the strongest with an epicentre on Myanmar's land mass since 1912, the US Geological Survey reported, killing nearly 3,800 according to an official toll still rising daily. Devastation centred on the second most populous city of Mandalay where apartments, tea shops, hotels and religious institutes were razed or heavily damaged.
"It's been a month but we are still very busy trying to get back what we lost," said one Mandalay resident who asked to remain anonymous. "I am not the only one still in difficulty, it's everyone around me as well." With tens of thousands people still homeless as monsoon season approaches, aid agencies are warning of major challenges to come. "People are extremely concerned about what will happen in the next few weeks," the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Myanmar chief Nadia Khoury told AFP.

Myanmar regime bombs Kachin ‘jungle hospital’ three times in one week. The attacks have forced the hospital, run by the renowned CDM surgeon Dr. Soe Min, to temporarily suspend op. Hospital in Kachin State’s Mohnyin Township that provides vital healthcare to displaced people was targeted by airstrikes 3 times last week, says doctor who runs the facility. On Thursday, Dr. Soe Min wrote on Facebook that Myanmar’s military attacked the hospital near Indawgyi Lake on April 22, 24, and 26. While there was some damage to the hospital, no one was injured, he wrote.
The hospital treats over 1,000 malaria patients monthly, has had to temporarily close due to airstrikes, he added. “There are also 4 or five people who come to get TB medication every month patients who receive cancer treatments. Now all those patients are in trouble,” Dr. Soe Min wrote. In April, three columns of junta troops began advancing north through Mohnyin Township to the jade-mining town of Hpakant, which is controlled by anti-regime forces. . .

Myanmar’s authorities have once again put ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s lakeside mansion up for auction – marking the fourth time it has failed to attract any bidders. On Tuesday, a court-appointed auctioneer emerged from the rusty gates of the mansion to start the bidding with starting price of 270 billion kyats (£102m) – a value that has reduced with each attempt to sell it off, falling from the initial £113.6m court-ordered asking price last year. The auctioneer raised the bids three times as per protocol but received no offers, before declaring, “We hereby announce that the auction is not successful”.

More than 300 Myanmar people fled into Thailand to seek refuge following an assault on the military by ethnic armed groups, Thailand said on Thursday (May 8), days after the junta extended a post-earthquake ceasefire. Myanmar has been mired in civil conflict since a military coup in 2021, with the junta battling a coalition of ethnic armed organisations and pro-democracy resistance forces. Wednesday's attack by Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) & its allied Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) targeted a military base in Kayin state, about 2.5km from the Thai border, according to the Thai military. "The attack involved a close-range encirclement of the base and the use of armed drones to continuously drop explosives throughout the day," a statement said.
By Thursday, 327 Myanmar nationals had crossed into Thailand & sheltering in two temporary sites, including a temple, with Thai military and police providing security & humanitarian aid, officials said. Thai forces have ramped up patrols along the border in Tak province to prevent what officials described as a potential "breach of sovereignty by foreign armed forces". Myanmar's military government and various armed groups opposed to it announced a ceasefire after the Mar 28 quake to help relief and recovery efforts. Truce has been repeatedly broken by air strikes by junta & attacks by armed groups.

Myanmar's military govt chief wants better bilateral relationship with China in first meeting Xi Jinping since taking power in 2021. Two leaders met Friday in Moscow on sidelines commemoration of 80th anniversary of defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. China, along with Russia, is a major arms supplier to Myanmar’s military in war against pro-democracy ethnic minority resistance forces.
Beijing is also Myanmar’s biggest trading partner and has invested billions of dollars in mines, oil and gas pipelines, and other infrastructure. Its interests in security in Myanmar are especially strong because the two nations share an 890-mile (1,440-kilometer) border

Anti-junta fighters on Thursday initiated an effort to rescue & relocate the hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking shelter at the Taung Lay Lone monastery in Nyaung Pin ward on Bhamo’s north side, responding to a plea from the IDPs themselves, a man connected to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) said.
After deploying drones to fly over the monastery for reconnaissance, the military attacked using fighter aircraft during the monastery’s evacuation at around 1:30pm that day, according to the same source.
“They carried out two airstrikes against the civilians, dropping two to four bombs each time,” he said. “They strafed with machine.
