Fatal clashes have broken out between Thai and Cambodian troops along a disputed section of their border with both countries accusing the other of provocation, after weeks of simmering tensions between the south-east-Asian neighbours.

At least two Thai civilians were killed and two others injured by shelling from the Cambodian side on Thursday, according to a district official, while the Thai army said it had launched airstrikes on military targets in Cambodia.

Thailand’s military said it had closed all border checkpoints and that fighting was taking place at six different locations.

It comes after clashes broke out near the Khmer Hindu temple, Ta Muen Thom, on Thursday morning. The Thai military said Cambodian troops had opened fire near the temple, and deployed a surveillance drone before sending in troops with heavy weapons, including rocket launchers

And Thailand’s PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was suspended from office on 1 July to be investigated for possible ethics violations over her handling of the border dispute. Details of a phone call she held with Hun Sen in a bid to deescalate conflict were leaked, with critics accusing her of betraying her country and kowtowing to Cambodia.

Mounting tensions have punctuated by a diplomatic tit-for-tat, with Cambodia banning Thai movies, TV shows, stopping import of Thai fruits and vegetables & boycotting some of its neighbour’s international internet links & power supply. It also stopped importing fuel from Thailand.

The two countries have faced off since the killing of a Cambodian soldier late in May during a brief skirmish. Troops on both sides of the border were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse.
Thailand's death toll remained at 19 on Saturday, while Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said five soldiers and eight civilians had been killed in the fighting. In the Kanthralak district of Thailand's Sisaket province, on the border near some of the clashes, hotel worker Chianuwat Thalalai said the town had emptied out.

"Nearly everybody's gone, it's almost a deserted city," the 31-year-old told Reuters. "My hotel is still open for some of those nearer to the border area that needs a place to stay."Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations told a Security Council meeting on Friday that soldiers had been injured by newly planted land mines in Thai territory on two occasions since mid-July - claims Cambodia has strongly denied - and said Cambodia had then launched attacks on Thursday morning. Thailand urges Cambodia to immediately cease all hostilities and acts of aggression, and resume dialogue in good faith," Cherdchai Chaivaivid told the council in remarks released to media.

DECADES OF DISPUTES
Cambodia's defence ministry said Thailand had launched "a deliberate, unprovoked, and unlawful military attack" on Thursday, and was now mobilising troops and military equipment on the border. "These deliberate military preparations reveal Thailand's intent to expand its aggression and further violate Cambodia's sovereignty," the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Cambodia called for the international community to "condemn Thailand's aggression in the strongest terms" and to prevent an expansion of Thailand's military activities. Bangkok reiterated it wanted to resolve the dispute bilaterally, telling the Security Council it was "deeply regrettable Cambodia has deliberately avoided meaningful dialogue and instead sought to internationalise the issue to serve its own political objectives".

That led to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths. Cambodia in June said it had asked court to resolve its disputes w/Thailand, which says has never recognised court's jurisdiction and prefers a bilateral approach... Tongue

Chinese arms manufacturer Norinco should face international sanctions for arming the junta.

Myanmar’s Conscription Law has helped replenish its depleted ranks in fighting across the country but it has become a nightmare for men. The junta activated the People’s Military Service Law in February 2024, requiring all eligible men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 to serve for two to five years of military service. Abductions and other forms of forced conscription are becoming increasingly common, also targeting children and older men, as the regime grows more desperate for troops.

While many younger people could dodge conscription by emigrating, many others have been recruited, including 27-year-old Ko Shay. Ko Shay from Myawaddy, Karen State, near the Thai border, was among those abducted off the streets for military service. He served in Light Infantry Battalion 224 but defected to the Karen National Union and became an anti-regime fighter. Ko Shay (right) and another defector with the Karen resistance. / KNU

How did junta abduct you?. In Myawaddy town at night on November 13, a patrol that included a ward administrator and soldiers took me to the ward office and told me I was being conscripted. If not, I would be jailed for violating the curfew.

What happened next?
They sent me to Light Infantry Battalion 201 in Hpa-An Township, Karen State, in conscription batch 8. There were at least 36 recruits from Karen State. Then they sent us to Advanced Military Training Depot 12 in Palauk, Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region.. There are around 300 recruits. Some were older than 50 and some were mentally unstable. They just want quantity, so they didn’t mind if a mentally unstable person could follow instructions.

Some were kidnapped during a night out, and some were deported from Thailand for illegal status. In some cases, individuals were paid to serve in the military on behalf of conscription-eligible people.

Military declared a state of emergency in Feb 2021 as it deposed civilian govt of democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking a many-sided civil war which has claimed thousands of lives.

The order gave junta chief Min Aung Hlaing supreme power over legislature, executive and judiciary - but he has recently touted elections as an off-ramp to the conflict. Opposition groups including ex-lawmakers ousted in the coup have pledged to snub the poll, which a UN expert last month dismissed as "a fraud" designed to legitimise the military's continuing rule. Junta seized power making in 2020 election with Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won in a landslide win  She remains jailed alongside their other top leaders.

An order signed by Min Aung Hlaing cancelled the emergency rule which handed power to him as the armed forces chief, returning it to the head of state. Min Aung Hlaing also occupies that office as the country's acting president. So junta ends state of emergency in election run-up - CNA

Thai said an F-16 fighter jet had fired into Cambodia & destroyed a military target. They said several more jets were ready to be deployed. “We used air power against military targets as planned,” Thai deputy spokesperson Richa Suksuwanon told reporters.
Cambodia’s influential former premier Hun Sen – father of current prime minister Hun Manet – said 2 Cambodian provinces had come under shelling from Thailand’s military. A statement posted online, Hun Manet said “Cambodia has always taken a stand to solve problems peacefully, but in this case we have no choice but to respond with armed forces against armed aggression.”Clashes are the latest in a history of conflict along 817km border that Cambodia & Thai
share, sections of which are subject to overlapping territorial claims due to disagreements about colonial-era maps. Last major clashes occurred between 2008 and 2011, where fighting & artillery exchanges killed at least 34, & wounded many more & displaced thousands.

Commenting on Thursday’s clashes, Thailand’s acting premier, Phumtham Wechayachai, said the situation @Thailand’s border was “delicate”. “We have to be careful,” he told reporters. “We'll follow international law".
Thursday’s clash came after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia on Wednesday and said it would expel Cambodia’s envoy in Bangkok, after a 2nd Thai soldier in the space of a week lost a limb to a landmine in disputed area. Thailand said landmine had been placed in area recently, claims Cambodia describes as baseless. They has many landmines left over from its civil war decades ago, numbering in the millions according to de-mining grps.

Thai govt has also ordered closure of all border checkpoints under their jurisdiction of Thailand’s Second Army, the ruling Pheu Thai party said.

Tourists strictly prohibited from entering border Clapping areasTongue Hostilities between Cambodia / Thailand have continued to escalate in recent months were initially ignited after a Cambodian soldier was killed in May in an armed confrontation in an area both countries claim as their. Many border checkpoints have already been closed by one side or the other or operated with restrictions.

Former Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council reveals why Cambodia abandoned soldiers' bodies on border without proper rites, estimating heavy Cambodian casualties. The issue of Cambodian soldiers' bodies being abandoned has gained significant attention, starting w/hidden death toll of the "infantrymen," which led speculation t
losses could be substantial. Matter escalated when strong smell of decomposing bodies along the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly in the areas where clashes occurred, became a major issue. Situation was so severe that campaigns launched to collect donations for high-quality face masks, alongside direct protests from Thai side, fearing potential disease outbreaks.

Lt Gen Pongsakorn Rodchomphu, former Deputy Secretary-General of National Security Council, explained why Cambodian army abandoned its soldiers' bodies, stating followed a Russian-style military strategy. Cambodia, he said, adhered to same principle: focus solely on advancing in battle, with no regard for soldiers' deaths. Once dead, they were simply left behind. This approach further supported by a dictatorial political system, where leaders prioritise maintaining power self-preservation over well-being of citizens & soldiers.
This strategy, if the war drags on, could place Thailand at a disadvantage, as Cambodia's soldiers can die without consequence & compensation for their families is minimal. Similarly, Gen Nipat Thonglek, former Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Defence & former head of Military Border Affairs Dept, provided similar insights.

In addition, situation surrounding the heavy loss of Cambodian soldiers has led to images circulating among the Cambodian military personnel, which made their way to Thailand. Some images were also collected along the border. Social media platforms and Cambodian citizens have been widely sharing information about missing soldiers discussing the high death toll among Cambodian troops. Particularly sensitive, as Vice Governor of Kampong Thom, Thy Sovantha, was recently dismissed by former Prime Minister Hun Sen for posting that Cambodian soldiers had health issues due to excessive alcohol consumption. The reason Cambodia abandons its soldiers' bodies on the battlefield without conducting proper rituals is to prevent spread of news about heavy casualties, which could undermine Hun Sen's authority.
Pongsakorn  assessed the losses, estimating that troops engaged in the heaviest fighting against Thai forces had likely lost no fewer than 3,000 men.

Junta-appointed Shan State Chief Minister Aung Aung and Triangle Region Command Chief Major-General Soe Hlaing on Thursday visited Panghsang (also known as Pangkham), the capital of Wa State, which is controlled by the United Wa State Army. Visit comes as junta ramps up preparations for elections at end of the year in a bid to legitimize its rule. The chief minister conveyed “cordial greetings” from the junta, newly rebranded as State Security & Peace Commission, to UWSA leadership, a signatory to a ceasefire with military regime. He promised support for education and healthcare development in Panghsang as well as “preparations for elections scheduled for December”, according to the WeChat page of the Voice of Wa State.
