ASEAN’s Myanmar Peace Effort in Limbo After Envoy’s Visit. Irrawaddy learned, he (envoy) did however meet w/junta

Othman, a former M'sian Foreign Ministry secretary-general, was appointed as ASEAN’s envoy to Myanmar in Jan when M'sia assumed the bloc’s rotating chair for 2025. Envoy’s role is to mediate peace for Myanmar, which has been racked by a civil war sparked by the 2021 military coup. M'sia is one of the founding members of ASEA along with Indonesia, M'sia, Philippines, S'pore & Thai. Thailand & Philippines previously voiced doubts on Myanmar joining the bloc unless its internal situation at the time improved but dropped those reservations to advance regional unity. Myanmar was admitted after junta chief Snr Gen Than Shwe freed opposition leader Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 1995. Myanmar’s military regime at time had caused a rift in relations with West & disrupted plans to hold summit meeting between European & Asian leaders. In 2016, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi became State Counsellor led country until 2021 military coup, since when he has been imprisoned by the junta. Following coup, regime has failed to honor any part of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus for peace in Myanmar, leading to criticism the bloc is not pushing the peace plan hard enough. High-level junta officials are currently banned from ASEAN meetings

Burmese drive General Min Aung Hlaing and his brutal military regime from power, as they seem about to do, the first thing they should do afterwards is take a leaf from Costa Rica's book and abolish the army. Don't reform it or downsize it; just get rid of it forever. Burma has no foreign enemies threatening to attack it; all its security problems are domestic. What it needs is an impartial police force, not a corrupt and cruel army. The military has been a curse on the country ever since Burma got its independence in 1948.
The Tatmadaw, as the army is known, got off on the wrong foot from the start. Under British rule, there was no Burmese army, but during the Second World War young Burmese nationalists sought military training from the Japanese. Quite a few fought alongside the Japanese. No surprise in that: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".
The next 75 years saw a parade of military officers seize power impose various half-baked ideological schemes on country fought one another waged incessant military campaigns against big minority groups. (Only 2-3 of the Burmese population are ethnic Burmese, and the soldiers see their job as keeping the other ethnicities down. If students and other civilians dared to protest against the economic shambles and the political repression, the military just massacred them, sometimes killing hundreds of people. Above all, they drained every last drop of value out of the economy to feather their own nests. The army effectively took over the economy and the country got ever poorer.
Burma and next-door Thailand used to be almost twins: the languages are very different, but they share almost a thousand years of intertwined history, religion and culture. They also used to be similar in wealth, but Thailand's GDP per capita is now US$7,000 (236,000 baht) while Burma's is copy,100. The army did that.

Myanmar’s head of military government travels to ally Russia for talks with Putin. Russia defends Myanmar’s military govt in international forums, and the ruling generals generally support Moscow’s foreign policy agenda. It report said Min Aung Hlaing will also meet with other top Russian officials and discuss bilateral ties, economic affairs and security with the aim to strengthen strategic cooperation.
