Nothing to Celebrate’: Myanmar’s Abortive Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement Marks 10th Birthday

As civil war rages across Myanmar, the military regime is holding a three-day workshop to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) between the government and ethnic armed organizations.
But today the truce exists only on paper.

Six of the 10 signatories are now fighting against the regime, and three of the co-opted four others have no effective armed force at all.

BANGKOK — Myanmar’s military has shut down a major online scam operation near the border with Thailand, detaining more than 2,000 people and seizing dozens of Starlink satellite internet terminals, state media reported Monday.

Myanmar is notorious for hosting cyberscam operations responsible for bilking people all over the world. These usually involve gaining victims’ confidence online with romantic ploys and bogus investment pitches.

The centers are infamous for recruiting workers from other countries under false pretenses, promising them legitimate jobs and then holding them captive and forcing them to carry out criminal activities.

Myanmar military raids notorious cybercrime center on the border with Thailand.

Myanmar’s military has detained more than 2,000 people following a raid on the KK Park compound, a well-known online scam center near the Thai border.

Guardian reported, citing local state-run media sources. The operation, launched in early September, targeted online fraud, illegal gambling and cross-border cybercrime activities. KK Park, located on the outskirts of Myawaddy in Kayin State, has been repeatedly linked to cyberfraud operations that traffic foreign workers and force them into online scams.
Myanmar has been embroiled in a civil war since the military coup d’état in 2021, marked by fierce battles with the Karen National Union, an armed group representing the Karen ethnic minority that opposes the junta. Amid this power vacuum, the country has become a haven for criminal syndicates running large-scale scam operations just across the border from tourism-thriving Thailand.
During the raid, Myanmar authorities identified more than 260 unregistered buildings in the area and seized 30 Starlink terminals, all of which were smuggled into the country. Starlink does not provide services in this part of the world, according to the Guardian.

When insurgents finally gained control of the town of Kyaukme - on the main trade route from the Chinese border to the rest of Myanmar - it was after several months of hard fighting last year. Kyaukme straddles Asian Highway 14, more famous as Burma Road during World War Two, & its capture by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) was seen by many as a pivotal victory for opposition. It suggested that the morale of the military junta which had seized power in 2021 might be crumbling. This month, though, it took just three weeks for the army to recapture Kyaukme. The fluctuating fate of this little hill town is a stark illustration of how far military balance in Myanmar has now shifted, in favour of the junta.

Myanmar scam centre raid sends hundreds fleeing to Thailand
While some scam workers are clearly trafficked into often fortified compounds, experts say others go voluntarily with hopes of earning more in the multibillion-dollar illicit industry than they can at home.

Following Malaysia’s optimism over the Myanmar military regime’s professed “cooperation” in peace talks, and its agreement to an immediate ceasefire, insiders are warning not to fall for what they call the junta’s “ceasefire charm offensive”. According to the Myanmar Employers Organisation (MEO), the junta’s strategy to rebrand its rule involves fielding at least 30 senior military officers as election candidates and staging participation in a 27-group dialogue to create the illusion of cooperation before the December polls.

Junta column arrived from Shwebo raided Saing Naing Kwayt, a village on the Shwebo-Mandalay road. Junta forces have established strongholds in multiple villages along the road, including Saing Naing Kwayt, Ywar Thar Gyi, and Hla Taw.
The ongoing military operations are part of a broader strategy to expand junta control over key routes and regions in the area. Many villagers in southern Wetlet Township, including those from Ywar Thar Gyi, Htone Bo, and surrounding areas, have been displaced due to the advancing columns. These displaced people are in urgent need of food, medicine, shelter, and clothing. While Wetlet Township is not included in the upcoming elections, neighbouring Shwebo and Sagaing townships will take part in the first phase polls on December 28.

The Karen National Union (KNU)’s armed wing and allies on Friday recaptured the Myanmar–Thai border town of Mawdaung in Tanintharyi Region after a hiatus of 35 years, according to resistance fighters.
The hill town is located at the Singkhon Pass border where Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is at its thinnest. It served as HQ of KNU’s Myeik District until junta occupied it in 1990. Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) allied resistance groups launched an offensive to seize the town four days ago & sent last of regime soldiers & administration officials fleeing to the Thai side on Friday morning.

Some 1,000 resident were displaced to nearby villages, according to volunteers helping them. By capturing Mawdaung, KNU now controls road from Thai border to Theinkun village 5.4 km away in the lowlands. A defector said junta has been unable to pass area for almost 2-years.
