Another Entire Junta Battalion Raises the White Flag in Myanmar’s Northern Shan State

Another entire junta battalion surrendered to the Brotherhood Alliance in northern Shan State on Tuesday, the 33rd day of Operation 1027 – the coordinated offensive in northern Myanmar led by three ethnic armies that has proven that the junta’s heavily armed military is far from invisible.

The offensive has also inspired other resistance forces across Myanmar to step up attacks against the once-powerful and still hated military, known as the Tatmadaw in Myanmar.

Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has called on armed ethnic groups involved in an offensive. He warned if armed organisations keep on being foolish, residents of the relevant regions will suffer bad impacts. So, it necessary to consider the lives of the people, and those organisations need to solve their problems politically," the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported.

Myanmar's military is facing the biggest challenge to its grip on the Southeast Asian nation since taking power in a 2021 coup, after three ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated offensive in late October, capturing some towns, including major border trade zones, and military posts.

A parallel civilian govt backing some of the armed rebel groups dismissed Min Aung Hlaing's call for dialogue. "As they are losing badly on the ground, they are trying to find an exit route. There would be genuine dialogue if military guarantees it no longer has a role in politics; they must be under an elected govt," said Kyaw Zaw, a spokesperson for the parallel National Unity Govt.

Urban centres war-torn parts of Myanmar used to be largely controlled by military, even after February 2021 coup that triggered armed resistance against junta rule rising rapidly gaving victories made over the past month by a powerful alliance of three ethnic armed groups in Myanmar’s north, as well as the parallel offensives by other rebel forces they spurred, have shattered this veneer of invincibility.

Time for Myanmar’s neighbours to recalibrate approach as regime loses ground. Myanmar's military stares at defeat as rebel forces go on the offensive. The rebels appear to hold all the initiative on the battlefield in Myanmar, says a Lowy Institute researcher.

With the People’s Defence Force and the Communist Party of Burma’s People’s Liberation Army stepping up their fight against the Tatmadaw. In the past month, different rebel forces have overrun junta outposts and captured large swathes of land, including several towns and border crossings with India and China.

But two main factors will answer the question about how this latest fighting might shape the outcome of the battle against the junta: First, whether the rebel forces can maintain the pace of the offensive; second, how effectively the Tatmadaw can regroup with a counteroffensive.

There are several indicators suggesting that the rebels hold advantages on the battlefield. Given the junta’s brutality, the rebels can expect to draw on popular support. The local population is critical in any insurgency campaign, as it can lead to tangible support such as intelligence, materials and personnel.

LITTLE LOVE FOR MYANMAR'S MILITARY GENERALS

Since the February 2021 coup, the junta has imprisoned nearly 20,000 people and caused nearly 1 million people to be internally displaced. The junta’s four-cuts strategy to stifle opposition terrorises the civilian population. To maintain power, the junta has unleashed its air force to strike against civilian targets, so there is little love for the generals.

Since October, three ethnic armed organisations under the banner of the Three Brotherhood Alliance have launched a coordinated offensive against the ruling military junta. Codenamed Operation 1027, the campaign has included the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, and the Arakan Army, targeting Tatmadaw’s controlled areas and military outposts.

By The Irrawaddy DECEMBER 8, 2023 46

The Irrawaddy’s latest roundup includes incidents in Shan and Rakhine states and Mandalay, Magwe, Sagaing and Tanintharyi regions. Irrawaddy has collected the following reports....Some military casualties couldn’t be independently verified.

Two more junta bases seized by resistance groups in northern Shan

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) said it and a PDF group attacked & seized Lal Gyi junta base in Monglon town in Kyaukme Township, northern Shan State amid heavy air strikes on Thursday. Ten weapons, ammunition & military equipment were seized from the base.

During the raid, a junta fighter jet conducted 12 air strikes in a failed attempt to defend the base.

On the same day, the TNLA also attacked and occupied the Kho Mone junta base in Mantong Township, northern Shan.

Also on Thursday, the TNLA attacked military bases in Namkham and Kutkai townships, to which the junta responded with air strikes and shelling to defend the bases.

The attacks were part of Operation 1027, which is being conducted by the Brotherhood Alliance of the TNLA, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Arakan Army in Shan, Kachin, Chin and Rakhine states and Mandalay, Sagaing and Magwe regions.

With his army badly afflicted by resistance drone attacks over the past month, junta boss Min Aung Hlaing warned fresh graduates of the Defense Services Academy last Saturday to brace for 21st-century warfare and military strategies.

It is unusual for Myanmar’s military to disclose casualties or defeats in any battle. But Min Aung Hlaing has admitted on at least two occasions that drone attacks are taking a heavy toll on his troops in northern Shan State.

Junta Watch: India Comes Calling After Regime Loses Border Towns; Dictator Complains of Resistance’s ‘Excessive Force’; and More

Envoy Vinay Kuma and General Tin Aung San discussed border security cooperation, including military training.

Expanding the Operation 1027 anti-regime offensive, Chin resistance groups have seized the border-crossing town of Rih Kaw Dar, as well as Kamphat and Rezua on the India-Myanmar Friendship Road, in the past fortnight.

The battle for Rih Kaw Dar saw 40 junta soldiers flee over the border into India on November 13. The Indian Air Force returned them to the regime.

The Indian ambassador also met with junta-appointed foreign minister Than Swe and discussed cementing ties and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Myanmar’s military regime has remained silent on massacres that its troops have committed against thousands of civilians in Sagaing and Magwe regions and Kachin and Kayah states since the putsch.

But it complained loudly that ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) used “excessive force” in seizing seven towns and nearly 200 outposts in northern Shan State last month. “Foreign drone experts” had also been involved in the assaults, the regime alleged.

At Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, junta boss Min Aung Hlaing claimed that EAOs used drones with advanced technology to drop more than 25,000 bombs while also firing around 120 improvised rockets at junta outposts.

A week earlier, the regime branded the resistance offensive in northern Shan an invasion, hoping to win public support for its defensive battle. But a glance at social media shows Myanmar people continue to support the ethnic Brotherhood Alliance offensive in northern Shan State and are well-pleased about the junta’s defeats.

Who’s Who in the Two Major Anti-Regime Offensives in Myanmar?.

Since the onset of Operation 1027 and Operation 1111, two remarkable coordinated military offensives being waged against the Myanmar regime, many people may have been wondering who’s who in the operations, which have so far captured over 300 regime bases and around 20 towns in just over six weeks.

Simply put, it’s a fight between the Myanmar military junta and anti-regime forces.

However, on ground, it involves sophisticated coordination among dozens of anti-regime groups, from established ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) to armed resistance armed groups, largely made up of young people, that sprung up after the 2021 coup.

To help readers make sense of this complex situation, The Irrawaddy lists below about 30 resistance groups, including 10 ethnic armed organizations (EAOs), that are actively participating in the operations.
