KIA Seizes Three Junta Positions in Battle for Myanmar-China Trade Route.

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) launched an onslaught against junta positions along the road to the border trade town of Kanpiketi in Kachin State’s Waingmaw Township on Tuesday, seizing three by evening, according to KIA spokesman Colonel Naw Bu.

The KIA captured a junta checkpoint between Waingmaw and Sadung, a position on Bwan Taung Hill, and an outpost of Border Guard Force (BGF) Battalion 1003 between Sadung and Kanpiketi, said Col. Naw Bu

“We seized 3 positions today, clashes are also taking place in other locations. We intercepted junta reinforcements from Waingmaw,” the
captured positions had been guarded by junta soldiers and junta-affiliated militias, he added.

The regime responded by using missile launchers and howitzers to bombard Sadung and its vicinity, as well as KIA and allied forces advancing from their Kashi base. Two Mi 35 helicopter gunships also provided fire support for junta ground troops, according to sources.

In May, ethnic Kachin armed groups seized three junta bases in Waingmaw Township, including Light Infantry Battalion 321 headquarters and a Kashi base. The strategically significant 13th mile checkpoint seized by the KIA on Tuesday sits on the junction of the Waingmaw-Sadung-Kanpiketi road and Waingmaw-Chipwe-Sawlaw road.

The recaptured outpost was responsible for guarding BGF Battalion 1003 based in Sinkyaing village, Waingmaw Township, ethnic Laphai area was previously under control of KIA, which ran a school & checkpoint there but retreated following Myanmar military attacks in 2011.

Kanpiketi is among major Kachin border trade hubs with China. "It’s an important route for trade flows,” commented Col. Naw Bu.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has accused Myanmar’s regime of violating the China-brokered ceasefire in northern Shan State after Sunday’s airstrikes on a TNLA base.

A junta warplane dropped bombs, including a reported 500-pound bomb, on a TNLA base between Pantin and Manpein villages in Momeik Township, severely injuring three TNLA members, said TNLA spokeswoman Lway Yay Oo.

The TNLA is a member of the Brotherhood Alliance along with the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Arakan Army. They launched Operation 1027 against the regime in late October. The offensive ended with a China-brokered ceasefire in mid-January.

The MNDAA and TNLA gained huge swaths of territory in northern Shan State during the offensive. The TNLA now controls seven towns in the area, including territory along the Mandalay Region border that is historically Shan territory.

Lway Yay Oo accused the regime of frequently shelling and bombing TNLA bases since the ceasefire.

“They have often attacked our troops and the civilian population. They are testing our patience,” she said. It is not yet clear if the Sunday bombing resulted in civilian casualties, she said.

The TNLA said the regime shelled its positions at least 10 times between June 1 and 9. Lway Yay Oo said the TNLA has been compiling junta strikes after the ceasefire and will respond.

“We have been monitoring their activities and recording their human rights violations. We will respond,” said Lway Yay Oo.

Under the ceasefire, the Brotherhood Alliance agreed that its troops would halt attacks and would not make any further advances. The junta agreed to stop airstrikes and shelling.

The ethnic army said it will continue attacking junta targets in Maungdaw, Ann and Thandwe townships. Ann is in central Rakhine and Thandwe is in the state’s south. The Arakan Army also said on Friday that it has taken more prisoners of war and continues to search for junta troops who fled instead of surrendering.

The army has also taken control of neighboring Paletwa Township in Chin State.

Rakhine is Myanmar’s westernmost state. The 640-kilometer-long state is on the western fringe of Southeast Asia. It faces the Bay of Bengal and is separated from the rest of Myanmar by a range of mountains on its eastern border.

YANGON (dpa): Family of Myanmar's ousted former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has had no contact with Nobel Peace Prize winner since her imprisonment around 3 years ago, according to a press report on Monday. "In 3 & a half years, we have only received 1 letter from her, last January," her son Kim Aris told Italian newspaper La Repubblica in interview published on Sunday.

After that, neither he nor his brother ever heard from her again, Aris added, not even after Suu Kyi's transfer from prison in April. Junta ousted het & arrested Suu Kyi, she is democratically elected de facto head of govt, following a coup in February 2021. Junta controlled court later sentenced her to a total of 33 years in prison for numerous alleged crimes.

In 2023, the military junta reduced Suu Kyi's sentence by six years. In April, she was transferred from prison in the capital Naypyidaw to another location. According to her son, the family has not been informed of her whereabouts.

Her two sons had heard that 78-year-old Suu Kyi was ill and suffering from severe toothache that prevented her from eating. They then sent her a parcel with medication.

"And in January, unbelievably, we received a letter signed by her," said Aris. Myanmar authorities arrest 22 for marking Suu Kyi’s birthday: Media reported. Junta has rebuffed numerous requests by foreign leaders & diplomats to meet Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, who has reportedly suffered health problems during more than three years in detention.

A prominent pro-junta Telegram account posted several photos claiming to show those arrested, including one showing five people with their legs placed in the stocks.

Ms Suu Kyi, who turned 79 on June 19, has been detained by military since it toppled her govt and seized power in 2021. Junta coup and subsequent crackdown on dissent have sparked a widespread armed uprising that the military is struggling to crush. As Myanmar plunged more into chaos as violence following the army's takeover. The junta is coming under increasing pressure politically & also militarily, as rebel groups involved in violent resistance against Junta rule.

What’s Really Happening in Myanmar’s Northern Arakan?.

Many people claim to know what’s happening in northern Rakhine State, but judging by the statements and counter-statements and different figures, no one really knows and most people are seeing the situation through their selective lenses and echo chambers with the truth somewhere in the middle. “Myanmar’s Junta Plays Both Rakhine and Rohingya for Fools. Desperately trying to survive in Rakhine State with a large defeat looming, the junta is fomenting ethnic divide as fast as possible. The question is how deep the reconciliation between Rakhine and Rohingya is, to what extent they will see through and reject the junta’s games, and to what extent they will allow themselves to be the junta’s puppets again.”

Judging by social media, junta has successful. I'm sed extreme, contradictory points of view are dominating drowning out moderate voices. This was of course the junta’s intention, they have 70 years of experience in psychological warfare. Many of the X posts accuse Arakan Army (AA) of any crime they can think of, including genocide, while conveniently failing to mention any of the junta’s crimes. One suspects that some of these are actually junta-controlled X accounts. Unfortunately, many members of the Rohingya diaspora and activists have joined this chorus, with the AA responding with racist tweets and anger that escalates the tension.

There's a lack of empathy understanding on all sides. By empathy don’t mean sympathy, although it can lead to mean putting oneself in another person’s position trying to understand how they feel, think and what motivates them; action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, experience of another. One may still strongly disagree, but empathy enables one to better strategize how to respond to others. The prominent condemnation approach drowns out moderate voices.

People in a corner from which they tend to come out fighting, especially if they are proud and nationalistic. From the AA leadership’s point of view, they had provided the Rohingya with humanitarian aid and protection and were betrayed when some Rohingya joined the junta and fought for them. The majority of Rohingya support the revolution and many have joined the AA administration, police and even military voluntarily,

NLD Guardians’ Demise Leaves Aung San Suu Kyi Bearing Party Torch on 79th B’Day.
Following death of long-serving National League for Democracy (NLD) patron U Tin Oo on June 1, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, once the youngest co-founder in 1988, now stands as the party’s sole and oldest leader. She was 41 when party was established 1988, a deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protests, she turned 79 on Wednesday – her 4th b'day behind bars since NLD govt
was ousted in 2021 military coup.

Other founding members, like U Kyi Maung, U Aung Shwe & U Lwin of Patriotic Old Comrades’ League, guided party during her house arrest, &
U Tin Oo previous regime, have also passed away.
She once described ex-brigadier general U Aung Shwe and former colonel U Lwin as “guardians” of NLD’s survival party faced fierce pressure threats from junta authorities. Former general U Tin Oo was the last of the NLD’s “Khaki guardians” to die.
Others members of other founding faction, included intellectuals like Hanthawaddy U Win Tin and U Moe Thu, have also passed away. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is now left alone to continue.

U Kyi Maung, U Aung Shwe, U Lwin and U Tin Oo joined army as young men to fight British & Japan for independence. They served in military til they were forced to retire by dictator Ne Win after he came to power in 1962.

They took charge of the NLD while Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest in 1990s, early 2000s. They led party to victory in the 1990 general election, managed to keep it largely intact when junta ignored poll result then attempted to disband party in 1991. They also led party’s boycott of the sham election held by the previous regime in 2010.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi praised her quartet of military veterans during 2020 election campaign: “They view me as a commander & are very loyal. They are dutiful, like father and uncle to me.”

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest 3-times for total of 15 yrs between 1989 - 2010. She was first detained July 1989, 1-mth after her 42nd b'day, again in 2000 & 2003. Her
popularity never waned in all those years, she was greeted by overwhelming public support when released in 2010. 5-years later she led the NLD to a landslide victory 2015 general election, forming 1st civilian govt in 50 years since 1962 – a watershed moment in Myanmar’s modern history. Most of her cabinet members were younger than the then 65-year-old leader.

The tremendous popularity that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi & her NLD enjoy has been a constant thorn in side of Myanmar’s military leadership. Emerging as torchbearer of democracy after 1988, party has suffered intense persecution by successive military regimes.

Chairman U Aung Shwe and Secretary U Lwin join other NLD Central Executive Committee members for Independence Day celebrations at party HQs in Yangon in January 2007. Following another NLD landslide in 2020 election, Army chief Min Aung Hlaing staged a coup, jailed Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint & almost the entire NLD cabinet. Military takeover thenl bloody crackdown is triggered a popular armed revolt against junta as for now, dissolving  NLD, Min Aung Hlaing’s regime targeted NLD officials and party members with arrests and killings, while confiscating their property. The current junta’s persecution of the NLD has been significantly harsher than that of its predecessors. NLD members and elected lawmakers have meanwhile helped to form the parallel National Unity Government, joining their ethnic allies in the fight against military dictatorship.

As the regime steps up to disband NLD 2021, a defiant Daw Aung San Suu Kyi told her lawyers: “NLD was established for people so party will exist as long as the people lov it.” ‘The Lady’ Acknowledges Supporters Back then, ex-colonel U Kyi Maung, U Lwin, U Aung Shwe & U Tin Oo were there take care NLD as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned by junta. They are gone, & party’s last remaining leader remains behind bars in the junta’s fortress of Naypyitaw.

One vital question arises: Have Myanmar’s people forgotten Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is languishes in custody during a critical period for the country?. The frequent imprisonment of her a democracy icon is aimed at isolating her from the people during critical times. So Daw Aung San Suu Kyi retains unrivalled popularity among Myanmar people despite being cut off from outside world since 2021. City and rural folk from all walks of life, and young resistance fighters across the country, have prayed for her and all other political prisoners’ release at this time of year since 2021. A member of anti-regime group Octopus holds a flash mob protest to mark Daw Aung Suu Kyi’s birthday in Yangon on Wednesday. / Octopus. Arrests of flower strikers in 2023 failed to deter nationwide protests this year.

In another eg: Depth of national feeling, anti-regime group Octopus staged a flash mob protest in Yangon on Wednesday. A woman young enough to be Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s granddaughter held a red banner depicting a rose and the word “Suu” emblazoned in white. The word “Suu” was enough to terrify the junta. “Along with the people of Myanmar, we wish Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners a speedy freedom, long lives

Yangon parties on in war-torn Myanmar despite tough circumstances. Midnight in Yangon, 1 hour be4 start of military-mandated curfew. The car workshops had long gone silent in this eastern industrial estate. But party was just starting.

Youth clad in hoodies and sneakers thronged the narrow lane in front of a nightclub where security staff escorted patrons from their taxis to the entrance. A casually parked Mercedes coupe added to the traffic snarl.

Inside, the dance floor was heaving. In a swirl of tobacco and cannabis smoke, a deejay in a baseball jersey and baggy trousers worked the crowd to a frenzy. Myanmar Military Schools Swallow 15,000 Civilians in First Two Months of Junta Draft

The 3rd batch of conscripts has arrived at Myanmar military training centers across the country, just 2-months after the launch of training for draftees, junta media reported on Saturday.

The regime says it is drafting around 5,000 people in each batch, which indicates that up to 15,000 civilians have been conscripted so far.

Junta enforced the conscription law on Feb. 10 following a string of heavy military defeats on multiple fronts across the country.

The batches are being called up for training at five-week intervals, with the first batch reporting on April 8, the second on May 15, and the third on June 22. Junta media have not said when the third batch will begin training.

YANGON, June 26 — Myanmar’s junta chief has made a rare apology after security forces killed the popular abbot of a Buddhist monastery in an incident the military initially blamed on opponents of its coup.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Munindabhivamsa, 78, was a prominent teacher and author on Buddhism and head of a monastery that had publicly opposed the military’s 2021 coup that has plunged Myanmar into turmoil.

He was shot dead on June 19 as he travelled by car through central Mandalay region.
Junta-controlled media initially blamed opponents of its coup for the killing but the next day a senior monk who had been at the scene said security forces were responsible.

His accusation went viral on social media and the junta said it would investigate the incident."We are extremely heartbroken for losing Sayadaw Bhaddanta Munindabhivamsa,” junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said in a letter that was read out at the abbot’s monastery on Monday.

"We would like to give our sincere apology for this case,” the letter said. The car the abbot had been travelling in had no religious markings on it, according to the letter, and had not slowed down at a checkpoint, leading junta troops to open fire.

An investigation would be carried out and the junta would take "action based on the facts.” The abbot’s funeral would take place on Thursday

The military has long sought to portray itself as a protector of Buddhist identity, the majority religion in Myanmar. Since seizing power in 2021 it has arrested and jailed locals and foreigners accused of "harming” Buddhism in its sweeping crackdown on dissent that has seen thousands jailed or killed, according to a local monitoring group.

But the clergy have also been at the forefront of political protests. Huge demonstrations sparked by fuel price hikes in 2007 were led by monks, and the clergy also mobilised relief efforts after 2008’s devastating Cyclone Nargis and the inaction of a former junta. — AFP

Chin Brotherhood Hails Progress Against Myanmar Junta. The anti-regime Chin Brotherhood said it is stepping up attacks on junta bases in Matupi, southern Chin State, after forcing a rival Chin alliance out of the conflict zone.

The group launched Operation Chin Brotherhood on June 9 to drive junta troops out of Myanmar’s poorest state, which borders Bangladesh and India. The Arakan Army and Yaw Army from Magwe Region joined the operation.

The alliance seized the junta’s Light Infantry Battalion 304 headquarters on June 17. It was attacking Infantry Battalion 140 when it was allegedly attacked from behind by rival Chinland Council troops.

The two groups reportedly clashed on June 18 and Chinland Council troops were forced to retreat on Monday, said the Chin Brotherhood.

The Chinland Council was formed in December with more than 100 members, including the Chin National Army (CNA), ousted Chin MPs and anti-regime administrative organizations. The CNA was formed in 1988, saying it wanted a federal democracy to guarantee ethnic equality.

Singapore-based entities to Myanmar junta ‘dropped dramatically’ in past year: UN envoy. In the wake of a Singapore govt👍 investigation, exports dropped from more US$110 million to just over US$10 million.

Singapore govt began looking into the matter last year when 138 Singapore-based entities were identified by Mr Andrews as being involved in the flow of such supplies to Myanmar’s military junta.
According to Wednesday’s report, exports from Singapore dropped from more than US$110 million between April 2022 and March 2023, to just over US$10 million in the same period the following year.

Mr Andrews, who is the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, told CNA’s Asia Now programme that Singapore was a “standout” in the global decrease of weapons being shipped to Myanmar.

“Singapore was at one point, the centre of financing (for) many of these military procurement transactions, controlling or processing 70 per cent of them a year ago. That's down to 20 per cent,” Mr Andrews said.

A report he published in May last year found Singapore-based entities were the junta’s third-largest source of weapons and materials.“(This is) a significant step in the right direction for Singapore. On the other hand, we have the opposite direction with respect to Thailand,” he added.

TNLA: We Fight Until Myanmar Junta Falls

JUNE 28, 2024.. Ta'ang National Liberation Army's spokeswoman Nway Yay Oo tells Irrawaddy that the regime's troops have no will to fight. (TNLA) resumed Operation 1027 against Myanmar’s junta in northern Shan State & Mandalay Region, Tues
The armed group said it was responding to numerous junta airstrikes and artillery attacks, violating the January 10 China-brokered ceasefire deal with the regime.

Why did the TNLA resume Operation 1027?
The operation was halted for about five months but it is ongoing in Rakhine State. We have resumed the operation to eradicate the dictatorship and to protect the people. The junta media accused the TNLA of violating the ceasefire. How do you respond?.

The regime violated ceasefire (also known as the Haigeng Agreement) the junta bombarded our territory with artillery & aircraft. The junta is also making people face hardships & stop inspect on people & raise tax also destroyed bridges & roads, breaching the ceasefire deal. The junta first committed these violations.

Which armed groups are now involved in Operation 1027?. Operation 1027 is same as before. Besides Brotherhood Alliance, there are resistance groups, including Mandalay People’s Defense Force (PDF), PDFs in Mogoke and ethnic Danu resistance forces. The Arkan Army is fighting in Rakhine State. The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army is joining the fight against the junta in Nawnghkio.

During Operation 1027, the junta suffered heavy defeats. What are your aims this time?. The ambition is to eradicate the dictatorship. But I can’t say how long it will take or how far it will go.
The TNLA is also fighting in Mogoke, northern Mandalay Region, and allied groups are attacking junta strongholds in Madaya. Does the TNLA plan to expand into Mandalay Region?

Its too early for we wouldn’t reveal strategy for as soon. Why have had such huge victories in 3-daysThe junta suffered many defeats during Operation 1027. The soldiers fled instead of fighting and many defected.

On multiple frontlines, the soldiers realize they cannot win so they surrender or are defeated quickly. That is why our operation is achieving rapid success.

Myanmar military favouring Thai banks over S'pore banks@arms transactions: UN report

SINGAPORE – Myanmar’s junta is increasingly using banks in Thailand instead of Singapore for its purchases of military supplies, including arms used against groups opposing its 2021 power grab, according to a United Nations report.

The report, released by UN special rapporteur Tom Andrews on June 26, said banks located in Singapore were previously “the most important financial facilitators for Myanmar’s military procurement”, processing more thanUS$260 million (S$353 million) of arms payments between April 2022 and March 2023 (financial year 2022), which amounted to more than 70 per cent of the junta’s arms payments.

But the amount fell sharply to just over US$40 million between April 2023 and March 2024 (financial year 2023).

Banks in Thailand: Facilitating over US$60 mil worth of military procurement in financial year 2022 to processing more than double US$120 mil – in financial year 2023. However, report noted tha financial institutions might not be helping facilitate military purchases wilfully.
