Rising food costs have claimed yet another hawker business — this time, it's Western food stall Shaker Lakers.

The stall, located in Yishun Park Hawker Centre, will be closing for good in February next year, according to a Facebook post by its owners last Saturday (Dec 3).

They also explained why the stall had been shuttered for the past two weeks.


"We are sorry about the closure for the last (two) weeks as we are taking this time to re-evaluate the business operation.

"With a heavy heart, we have decided to cease operations."

With impending GST, more hawkers that offers cheap food for the low & average income locals will close down.

Not just food, all the basic necessity like medicine, groceries, utilities etc should be exempted from GST if this stoopid tax ish really aim at 'helping' the peasants. GST should be a luxury tax in the first place and not trying to 'help' the poor.

The rich are taxed but it forms only a tiny portion of their income

while the poor are taxed and is a larger portion of their income

That GST Rebate of Maximum $320 per year for 5 years is only sustainable for first 2 or 3 years

in the midst of compounding effect
