80% Cantonese are descendants of Baiyue people in Southern China. Baiyue were hundreds of tribes that were conquered by the First Emperor in 221 BC. Vietnamese, Thais, Burmese, Malay, Filipinos, Indonesians and Taiwan’s indigenous people are all tribal people from Baiyue who fled southern China to Southeast Asia after the conquest.
