I won't say I can speak for other races but for my own race, I believe I know why...

This paper chase is further encouraged by our government which places a lot of emphasis on academic excellence. It even awards a President's Scholarship to the top 0.01% of each year's cohort. Based on what? On your being a good swimmer? No. As the word scholar suggests, it's your school examination results. School, scholar.
