Two of Malaysia Airlines’ long-haul flights have since been re-routed — flights MH2 to London Heathrow and MH22 to Paris Charles de Gaulle were diverted yesterday for a refuelling stop in Doha, Qatar, before continuing to their destinations.

“We will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure safe and reliable operations,” the airline said in a statement. The move came following the closure of Amritsar Airport from May 7 to 9, citing concerns regarding regional security. Earlier, Batik Air announced the cancellation of its flights to the two destinations for today and tomorrow, following the ongoing situation between both countries.

It’s official: Rafizi, Nurul Izzah set for head-to-head PKR No 2 clash. His name was listed on PKR’s election website ahead of nomination deadline 11.59pm tonight, according to Free M'sia Today.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has confirmed his bid to defend the party’s number two post, officially setting up a one-on-one contest with vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar ahead of the central leadership elections. He had previously declared his intention to defend position, which he won in 2022 after defeating Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

In March, he said he had "no choice” but to contest again to ensure a healthy internal competition without derailing PKR’s role in govt. Just two days ago, he reaffirmed that decision and welcomed challengers.

Nurul Izzah binti Anwar, daugther of PM Anwar meanwhile, has gained strong backing from party leaders including vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek, youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim and senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for a post in her father PKR’s Parry... SUBANG JAY/KL: PKR cannot escape being attacked with accusations of nepotism from own party’s rivals now that Nurul Izzah Anwar is running for the PKR deputy presidency, says Rafizi Ramli.Rafizi said Nurul Izzah, daughter of party president Anwar Ibrahim, would undoubtedly have her own arguments to put forth. However, the incumbent deputy president said PKR as a whole must be ready for questions from the rakyat, like attacks from opposition parties on perception of nepotism.

With Nurul Izzah contesting for the deputy presidency, party cannot run away from ‘nepotism’ issue. but the fear of public perception against PKR party,” during a live recording of his Yang Bakar Menteri podcast @MBSJ multipurpose hall in Serdang here. Here!, Rafizi also took issue with PKR election committee chairman Dr Zaliha Mustafa over her handling of the party’s divisional elections, which had resulted in many of his allies losing their contest. He here accused her of ignoring hundreds of objections filed by members saying the party’s election panel was supposed to be an independent body that filters candidates vying for posts and identifies issues early on.

He questioned how committee could have such a major oversight, for eg: ln contest for Jempol division chief’s post, which had to be redone after the initial winner was found to be a Pejuang leader in Melaka.

He said, If Zaliha wants to be angry with me, go ahead ahh. (On But) This is her committee’s responsibility. I can’t intervene as my post is deputy president b"cos there’s a conflict of interest since I’m contesting. When there r objections, committee should respond to each one. This time, there were hundreds of objections that went unanswered. When we ask about it, they feign ignorance.

“I know for fact that, in this divisional election, they only started going through objections after polls were over. People were already angry by then,” he said.
He said there also claims one winner was an Umno member, that the issue of party memberships fell under the secretary-general, Fuziah Salleh.

He (the deputy) said he could not speak out previously otherwise he would be accused of trying to influence elections. However, he insisted that a lot of improvements needed to be made as to how PKR conducted its internal polls.
Whoever becomes the election committee chairman after this must remember that they hold a heavy responsibility because they are the first gatekeeper to the party to prevent such incidents. “So if members object (to something), don’t look down on them & act as though you have bigger issues to handle,” he said...The Deputy boss for now is like kanna corner, I think so. What matters most is whether promises are kept for the betterment of people’s lives. With the party at the height of political power, all eyes are on PKR’s leadership race and whether promises to the people can finally be delivered.
Contest between Nurul Izzah Anwar and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli for post Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is heating up as party prepares for internal elections in 2-weeks' time such rivalries are part of party politics, stakes are especially high this time, with PKR playing a central role in M'sia’s Unity Govt. Competition for leadership positions is fierce, far more so than in smaller political organisations, as candidates work to secure the support of grassroots members through various campaign methods.

Now in its 26th year, PKR is still considered relatively young—energetic, ambitious, at times confrontational. The party’s journey toward proving itself as a capable ruling entity is still unfolding.
During 14th General Election (GE14), PKR, as part of Pakatan Harapan (PH), succeeded in forming federal govt, only for administration to collapse 2 years.
However, following 15th General Election (GE15), PH returned power, through a coalition with Barisan Nasional under the Unity Govt framework. This 2nd chance must not be squandered. The coalition should be allowed to serve its full term to enable people to assess PKR and PH’s true capabilities in governing.

The current internal party election is critical to shaping the leadership team that will lead PKR into GE16, just two years away. If divisions arise from the contest, time remains for wounds to heal—or else the party risks internal instability. For now, the public—whether party members or not—are observers to the political manoeuvring and strategy on display. Once the dust settles, it is hoped that all contenders will reunite for the greater good, under the belief after conflict or quarrel, harmony is restored and to eventually reconcile.

Ultimately, what matters most is not the contest itself, but whether those elected can deliver on the promises made to the people. - May 12, 2025

ALOR SETAR, May 13 – In a shock move last night, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has urged his supporters to instead back rival Nurul Izzah Anwar in the upcoming party central leadership election.

Speaking at his campaign tour here, Rafizi said Nurul Izzah’s defeat would reflect poorly on the party & be seen as a rejection of its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — who is also her father.

“Let’s say Nurul Izzah loses, what signal would it send to the people? This is just an example. If she loses, it will send a message that PKR members reject Anwar. That is why Nurul Izzah must win. She has to,” he was quoted saying by Malaysiakini...Rafizi said he did not want PKR to face internal turmoil during the party polls only to suffer heavy losses in the general election.

“B'cos if she loses, we will go into the [next general] election in unimaginable situation where we have to not only face the opposition but also political polemics both inside and outside the govt.” He blamed senior party leaders for pushing Nurul Izzah to contest, saying it had created an unnecessary issue driven by internal efforts to sideline division leaders aligned with him.

Rafizi also said there had been a consensus within the central leadership council and political bureau that the top two positions should not be contested, in order to preserve party unity.

However, Chang noted that some quarters were intent on portraying the contest as a factional split between incumbent Rafizi and Nurul Izzah.
“There is no crisis. This is a norm in party elections,” he said. Chua said a true succession plan would involve a collaboration among a broader set of senior leaders, which he claims PKR has been unable to put together due to past defections and leadership gaps. An intense showdown is shaping up between Nurul Izzah and Rafizi for the second-highest office in the PKR hierarchy.

The science, technology and innovation minister. Chang, the party’s Tanjong Malim chief, is defending his vice-president’s post at party polls scheduled for May 23. The party’s recent division-level election has seen technical glitches allegations vote mismanagement, giving rise to speculation that certain factions are dissatisfied with Rafizi’s leadership and pushing for Nurul Izzah to take over. Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua recently claimed the contest suggests that the party was facing a succession crisis.
