Duterte said that after being elected president of the Philippines in 2016, he tried to formulate an independent foreign policy and emphasized that this was not against the United States .
He pointed out that the current Philippine government regards the South China Sea issue and the Taiwan issue as the basis of its foreign policy towards China.
"We can only wait, because it is the United States that tells the Philippine government what to say to China, so (if this situation is not changed) this will always be an endless cycle."
Marcos Jr. also denied that his government was merely following orders from the United States, saying in an interview last month that he had not provoked China.
