The number of people leaving the Armed Forces has jumped by almost a fifth amid warnings that substandard accommodation is driving troops out of the military.

Official figures published by the Ministry of Defence show that 16,250 people left the UK regular Armed Forces in the 12 months to October 2022 - an increase of 17.4 per cent compared with the previous year.

It represents the largest number of people leaving the military since 2016.

The overall number of Armed Forces personnel meanwhile fell by 6,640 (3.3 per cent) to 192,300, with recruitment decreasing by nearly 30 per cent compared to the previous 12 months.

The increase in people leaving follows a decline in satisfaction with service accommodation, with a survey published by the MoD in May noting that it remained “well below levels reported in 2015”. The same survey found that the most frequently cited reason for leaving the military was the “impact on family and personal life”.

Last week, the Telegraph revealed that ministers are in talks to axe the housing contract for military accommodation after families were forced to spend Christmas in mould-infested homes.

Richard Foord, a former army major who is now the Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Honiton said that poor quality accommodation and slow responses to requests for maintenance were “demoralising and it does very quickly make people think ‘well we don’t need this’”.

Mr Foord said that the “exodus” of Armed Forces personnel would be made worse by troops having to replace striking ambulance drivers and Border Force staff over Christmas.

“The feeling that somehow the Armed Forces are being used to dig the Government out of a political hole is not going to help at all,” he said. “My fear is that this trend is going to be exacerbated.”
