She had sent the text message together with a photo showing two sandwiches to their family group chat on Whatsapp. Six hours later, she was dead.

"My mum texted earlier that day saying that my dad collapsed three times in 18 hours. So she got an ambulance to take him to the hospital," said the couple's youngest son Alexis Fong, 24.

Madam Pek was pronounced dead at County Aparthotel in Westgate Road in Newcastle. Fong was arrested and charged with murder.

He described his parents, who had been married for 27 years, as very loving.

"I am shocked this can happen to my sister. Everyone in the family is shocked too. My sister and brother-in-law have been so loving. We have always envied their relationship," said Ms Pek, 48, adding that the couple met during their pre-university days.

They liked to play mahjong and watch Hong Kong drama serials together. They would hold hands and show their affection for each other openly.
"My mum would kiss my dad even if he was just going to park the car," said Alexis.
