Only the later is truly driven not by fear of losing, but for survival

怕死 & 怕输 are worldly different in nature and reactions.

The question is will that such drive cause average human to act constructively or destructively.

When a person's very survival comes under threat, it will be "every man for himself", so it is most definitely going to be a destructive reaction.

retrenchments will become common as operating cost is higher.
and if one cannot bring food to table, it is only natural
for resentment to grow.

For IT and finance, maybe following the west,
as for other engineering maybe because they are young and cheap.

Sg success is much depend on good geographical, security and infrastructure.
Govt has done well in the later two but regional or global competitors can easily
duplicate as Sg employ many foreigners in its niche and fundamental roles.

That term is like looking at the world half empty.
