Final scene in The Last Emperor - what does it mean?
#1

The insect wont survive for so long in the case....
My guess is it symbolises final freedom from being trapped.

I saw this film many yrs ago. But never understood this scene...yesterday suddenly recalled and thought about it....

What do you think?

I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

there are only 2 scenes worth remembering................

1) a young emperor suckling on his wet nurse's very nice tit (the young boy actor very very lucky - wonder if he purposely NG many many times)

2) Joan Chen on bed in thin dress - braless..............

I want the whole movie....in the beginning the boy emperor saw the entire court officials assembled in front of him then he heard a cricket. He ran towards the sound of the cricket and stopped at an official who was in possession of the oet cricket.

The official gave him the cricket......

Son of heaven. Mandate of heaven. They fussed over the Emperor to such an extent that he could not even have a second helping of mala xiangguo if he liked it very much.

He had no privacy at all, no life other than a very regimented one of palace duties.

His would be a hybrid of a Malaysian sultan who is a guardian of the Islamic faith and a Singaporean Elected President who has a Council of Presidential Advisors...

He went to the Temple of Heaven to pray for his people. He presided over a court with oftentimes scheming ministers, his advisors who also competed with the just as scheming eunuchs and concubines for favours and positions that of course came with wealth.

When ESM Goh wrote about smelling the roses, that scene was about that. Freedom at last to be just him.

In that last scene, Puyi was portrayed as a smiling kind old man instead of an Emperor who could order the extermination of an entire family. It was freedom from a palace life which he had never known anyway and to be whom he was, a man like everybody else and a kind one. It did not show even a tinge of anger at not being what he lost.

I don't know if Puyi was really a kind man but the producer of that movie decided to cast him to be so.
