Commentary: For young doctors, the price of breaking bonds could be higher than they think

For young medical professionals, breaking one's public service bond for the more lucrative private sector may seem like an attractive choice — but such a trade-off comes with certain risks, says this veteran doctor. At the same time, more can be done to increase young doctors' job satisfaction and protect them from burnout.

Housing is quite a problem. If bought house at the east, but posted to a hospital at the west, lots of traveling.

I heard that docs may be restricted from practicing medicine in SG for a set period after breaking their bond. This may disrupt their career progression and limit their job options. Breaking the bond may make it more difficult to obtain work visas for other countries with similar scholarship programs as well. There may be a negative impact on the docs' reputation within the local medical community. So for those who cannot take the pressure and long hours or just want to earn more $ faster, it's important to weigh these potential drawbacks alongside the monetary cost before making a decision.
