Researcher: President Zelenskyi is not the right leader to take Ukraine to the EU

Ukraine is still far from meeting the membership criteria, and therefore the negotiations would be forced to take about 15 to 20 years, says Ryhor Nizhnikau, a senior researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute.

IN 2016, two years after Russia occupied Crimea, Politico magazine speculated on the prospects for various countries to join the EU. It estimates Ukraine's potential at 20% and the earliest possible date for accession in 2035.

Zelenskyi, who came to power in MAY 2019, HAS REGISTERED THE GOAL OF EU MEMBERSHIP IN THE CONSTITUTION OF UKRAINE. In practice, however, the country has come a long way in meeting the conditions for EU membership under the current government, Nizhnikau estimates.
