In almost all cases, long-Covid patients suffer from neurological impairments. The most common symptom is pathological fatigue. In around 90 percent of all those affected, no organic causes can be identified.
DThe Essen University Hospital is the second largest acute Covid treatment center in Germany after the Berlin Charité. Professor Christoph Kleinschnitz heads the neurology clinic there. In an interview, he reports on the results of his Long Covid study.
WORLD: What experiences have you had as a neurologist in connection with Covid patients?
Christoph Kleinschnitz: We have treated over 3000 acute Covid patients at Essen University Hospital and also published a study on neurological complications. These patients are more likely to have strokes, muscle weakness, and epileptic seizures, among other things. When Long Covid was first reported in summer 2020, the question of aftercare inevitably arose. Many sufferers reported symptoms that fall within the realm of neurology. In the meantime, more than 500 patients have presented in our neurological Long Covid outpatient clinic.
