German cars are over engineered. Which is why when anything needs to be repaired or replaced in a German car, it costs a bomb.
Same also applies to other things in Germany. They like to make something more complicated than it needs to be.

True, if you only need a car to drive from point A to point B then even a 1970 Datsun 120Y can do the job.
And the Ford Cortina I drove in 1974 was such a big deal.
