Probably some kind of alloy and that's why dun rust but not strong. As far as I know the best swords and sword makers were from Japan.      Rolleyes

Many metals become oxidized to protect themselves from rust. Common examples are stainless steel and aluminium.

Among them, 白钢 is still very shinny after many yrs
