Worried about the shortage of natural gas, the Germans began to rush to buy and hoard firewood

At present, European natural gas prices continue to rise. Worried about the shortage of natural gas, the Germans began to rush to buy and hoard firewood. The heating stove supplier said that the telephone kept ringing, and everyone wanted to have security (in the cold winter) and to have alternative heating measures. The German government previously said that Germany's natural gas storage rate has fallen to 25%. Although it has not encountered a supply bottleneck, natural gas consumers such as enterprises and households should still "save gas as much as possible from now on".

German wind energy stumbles

"Wind energy is one of the supporting pillars of the energy transformation," says the German Advisory Council on the Environment, which consults with the federal government in Berlin. "If it's not expanded far more swiftly, the German climate protection goals cannot be achieved."

Yet even as Russia's Ukraine war adds geopolitics to reasons for more domestic energy, a trifecta of bureaucracy, furious local opposition and intra-Green battles on wind energy vs protecting iconic birds like eagles will make delivery of Germany's expansion of wind power arduous at best.

This is not theory. These are my experiences as our family forestry business seeks to build wind turbines on four different sites in eastern Germany.

Wind turbine construction has been strangled in Germany by multiple constraints. The amount of electricity produced by newly-built windmills has plunged to less than half of the record peak set in 2017 for each of the last four years.

The Green party's minster for economy and climate protection, Robert Habeck, plans to radically increase the number of wind turbines and wants two-percent of German territory to be used for windmills — to enable Europe's biggest economy to produce 80 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2030 (up from 42 percent today) and be carbon-neutral by 2035.

But Habeck's problem is that windmills bitterly divide his followers between those prioritising clean energy and those wanting nature conservation, even at the cost of de-growth. Habeck's ministry declined to give an in-person or telephone interview for this story and did not reply to emailed questions.....

..... German polls show big majorities love renewables. Just NIMBY ("Not In My Backyard, Please). And not in our sacred forests.

Unless it changes tack, this one-third green German government, despite the best of intentions, is not going to be deliver on its renewable energy targets.

Ukraine war sparks major shift in Germany's energy opinions

To cover the energy gaps from Russia, most Germans are now willing to tolerate longer nuclear plant running times, as well as oil and gas imports from other totalitarian states, a new poll has shown.

UPDATE 3-German energy regulator to sustain Gazprom Germania operations

FRANKFURT, April 8 (Reuters) - Germany's energy network regulator on Friday said it would ensure ongoing operations at Gazprom Germania, a trading, storage and transmission business abandoned by Russia's Gazprom, and called on market operators not to cut ties.

With assets and subsidiaries in Germany, Britain, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic and outside Europe, the firm's activities are essential for the European gas market and its supply to industry and households.

Russia's Gazprom said a week ago it was quitting its business in Germany, at a moment of crisis in energy ties between the two countries following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It gave no explanation.

"The Bundesnetzagentur will ensure that all payments of Gazprom Germania GmbH may only be made to maintain business operations and will thus prevent an uncontrolled outflow of funds," the German regulator said in a letter to operators connected with Gazprom Germania and seen by Reuters.

Spokespeople for the authority confirmed the letter had been posted.

"It will also ensure that the company can, and will, meet its payment obligations to continue its business operations," it added.

Germany has used more resources in the first third of 2022 than are sustainably available to it for an entire year. Here's what needs to change.

It is only the beginning of May, but already Germany's Overshoot Day. In other words, per person, the country has used as much from nature in just over four months as can be regenerated in the space of a year.

Despite the heating season having just finished, Czechs are already stocking on firewood for the next one, fearing the rising energy prices, Czech Television reported on Monday.

For example, the Hradec Králové Municipal Forests report a threefold increase in demand for firewood compared to last year. Even people who had previously preferred other heating sources are now buying wood, even though its price is also growing.

In the forests of Hradec Králové, prices of firewood have increased by fifty percent since the beginning of the year. Forest supervisor Tomáš Jankovský says the greatest demand is for two-metre logs of spruce or pine, adding that their supply is sufficient at the moment.

“As far as coniferous fuel wood is concerned, we are able to cover the demand, but unfortunately there is a shortage of deciduous fuel wood,” Jan Rousek from the Czech Forestry Academy in Trutnov told Czech Television.

The pastoral village of Lützerath in western Germany will be bulldozed to make way for a coal mine, even as the country accelerates its plans to quit the world’s dirtiest source of energy.
........

..... Germany still burns large amounts of coal to produce the steel and other industrial goods that it uses to build cars and light homes and businesses. But lignite, a type of wet, crumbly coal used mostly to generate electricity, is the only coal Germany still produces domestically. So-called hard coal was phased out in 2018 and is now imported from places like Russia, which until recently accounted for half of Germany’s imports.

Shortages of natural resources was a primary reason why Japan went around attacking and raiding other countries.

Will history repeat itself? Russia may well be creating the conditions for that.

Truth be told, man will not die without a lot of the current modern convenience and gadgets. But he is not willing to take a step, or even a few steps down. He will whine, and say "I don't want to live like my great grandfather did! I want my car, I want air con, I want my smartphone...."

And the war begins.

Gerhard Schröder comes under increasing pressure over Putin ties

Gerhard Schröder is facing growing criticism in Germany for his ongoing support of Russia, as some politicians call for sanctions against him. He recently gave an inflammatory interview in which he defended his role.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schöder is coming under increasing pressure in Germany over his relations with Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing Ukraine invasion.

Having already being asked to resign from the party he once led, the Social Democrats, German politicians are now threatening further action, even suggesting he could become a target of Western sanctions targeting Russia and its allies.

Schröder led Germany from 1998 to 2005, and since leaving office, he has worked for Russian state energy firm Rosneft and the Nord Stream projects. He has also been nominated for the supervisory board of the Russian gas giant Gazprom, which on Wednesday switched off gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria.

What did Schröder say?
In an interview with the New York Times published last week, Schröder defended his close relationship with Russia and Putin. In the interview, Schröder questioned the Russian president's potential involvement in or prior knowledge of the massacre in Ukraine's Bucha, refused to resign from the energy firms unless Russia fully stopped gas exports, and spoke fondly of Putin.

"I don't do mea culpa," Schröder told the outlet. "It's not my thing."

Speaking on the war, Schröder said it was a "mistake." "What we have to do now is to create peace as quickly as possible." But he said there were obstacles to negotiations.

"What I can tell you is that Putin is interested in ending the war," Schröder said. "But that's not so easy. There are a few points that need to be clarified."

On the atrocities in Bucha, Schröder defended Putin, saying he doubted that the president would have ordered the killings himself, but said it should be investigated.

He baulked at the idea of distancing himself from Putin, saying it would lose him the trust of the only person who can stop the war.

Schröder attempted once to mediate in talks between the two countries but walked away unsuccessful after one attempt. He claims he is ready to try again.

Speaking on gas, he said his support of Russian gas exports to Europe was in line with the common political position of Germany. Schröder said Russia had always been a reliable partner when it came to delivering gas to Germany and Europe. "They got the money and they delivered the gas," Schröder told the publication. "Even in the toughest times of the Cold War, there were never any problems."

"You can't isolate a country like Russia in the long run, neither politically nor economically," he said. "German industry needs the raw materials that Russia has. It's not just oil and gas, it's also rare earths. And these are raw materials that cannot simply be substituted."

"When this war is over," Schröder said, "we will have to go back to dealing with Russia. We always do."
