HK: Infected boy, 2, fights for life
#1

Hospital Authority chief manager Lau Ka-hin said the boy, who had been in good general health, suffered from breathing difficulties after midnight yesterday and was taken to Yan Chai Hospital's accident and emergency department.

He was found to have a high viral load - with a CT value of 14.8 - and was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital's pediatric intensive care unit and connected to a breathing machine.

Lau said the boy's croup saw an acute inflammation in the trachea, causing the breathing tube to swell and narrow. It could be blocked in serious cases, causing breathing difficulties and even suffocation.

He said he had heard from pediatricians that they have observed an increase of croup cases in public hospitals.

"Croup is an acute condition that requires prompt treatment," he said. "If parents see children suffer from a high-pitched noise, shortness of breath, panting or any signs of trying very hard to breathe they should take them to doctors immediately."
