Prospect that the dour, stern Syrian leader would live forever was a source of dark humor for many of my Syrian friends when I lived and worked in Aleppo in the late 1980s and early 1990s.


Hafez al-Assad died in June 2000. He wasn’t immortal after all.

Arab Russian interpreters are urgently being sent to Syrian city of Hama, where Islamist "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" is fighting against Bashar al-Assad. They are Russian officers attempting to restore order among Syrian govt troops, Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR). news briefing on Tuesday, 3rd-Dec. Moscow has decided to send reinforcements of mercenaries from private military companies, part Moscow’s so-called “African Corps,” expected to arrive imminently, HUR report said from Ukraine. “Planned rotations of Russian troops in Syria have been suspended.”

Who are the opposition?
The offensive thrust into Syria’s Aleppo governorate began on Nov. 27 is being carried out by a coalition of Islamist militant groups led by the Turkish-backed former Al Qaeda affiliated group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. According to reports on some Islamist social media sites, the rebel groups based in the Idlib region – which is said to include members of the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) – had received op training from special forces troops from the Khimik group of HUR. Residents in Damascus have told of an anxious wait for news on what was happening in Syria's capital city over night. After several hours of reports, rebels getting closer & closer, forces declared Damascus "free" of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in the early hours of Sunday.

"No-one slept in Syria last night... no Syrian abroad slept," Rania Kataf, who runs the Humans of Damascus Facebook page, said. "The whole community was holding their phones waiting for final news. "How do I feel?
