We are all concerned about the high cost of living in Singapore, which is the most expensive city in the world. In a society where adults are stressed owing to money issues, most of us are not able to stop working in order to provide for our family. Although we have different stress triggers, work stress is perhaps the most significant source of tension in the family. When the parents have to deal with a heavy workload, handle too much responsibility, face long hours and feel insecure about their prospects for advancement or continued employment, the pressure is usually felt by the entire family.

Faced with advances in technology, longer working hours, unrealistic workloads and the authoritarian style of management at most organisations here, is it any wonder that working adults are exhausted, frustrated and too stressed out to consider marrying, starting families or even dating? Family responsibilities are a significant source of stress and managing a home can be demanding in the best of times, but providing for loved ones becomes extremely challenging and stressful under softer economic conditions. When financial hardship is added to the mix, long-term problems may arise that seriously interfere with the family’s health, happiness and even ability to stay intact.
