Tensions are once again rising in the Middle East as the U.S. Navy's USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier successfully intercepted six drones launched by Iran-backed Houthi militants in just 58 seconds, showcasing effectiveness of the new "Silent Dome" defense concept. Following precise intelligence from RQ-180 reconnaissance drones, four F-35C fighter jets launched coordinated airstrikes, destroying multiple Houthi weapons depots and eliminating several high-ranking militant commanders in five simultaneous explosions. Iran accused the U.S. of conducting covert ground operations, while Tehran escalated the rhetoric by announcing uranium enrichment levels nearing 84 percent—raising global alarm. In response, the U.S. deployed B-2 Spirit bombers and reinforced its naval defense line through CENTCOM, elevating cyber alert levels & warning its allies. NATO declared Iranian aggression would be met with a collective response. At UN Security Council, Iran stormed out of the emergency meeting, underlining the gravity of the crisis. SANAA, Yemen / ANKARA
US warplanes launched another 22 airstrikes across war-torn Yemen, the Houthi group said on Tuesday. Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV said six airstrikes targeted the Sanhan district and five others in the Bani Hashish district, northern Saada province.
Nine more strikes hit three areas in the central Marib province and two in the coastal province of Al-Hudaydah. Info on injuries or damage was not immediately available, and the US did not comment till the filing of this story.
Last month, US President Donald Trump said he ordered "decisive and powerful military action" against the Houthis and later threatened to "completely annihilate them." Trump, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, said strikes on the Houthis had been “very successful militarily.” At least 82 civilians have been killed and 214 others injured in US airstrikes across Yemen since March 15, according to local authorities.
Houthis have targeted ships in the Red & Arabian seas, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023 in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has killed more than 50,700 people in a brutal onslaught.
Campaign airstrikes started after the group threatened to restart targeting ships because of Israel's blocking aid from entering Gaza.

While More people were executed in 2024 than in any other year over the past decade, a huge increase in executions in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Amnesty Intl’s annual report on the use of the death penalty, the number of countries carrying out executions was lowest on record, it had confirmed 1,518 executions globally in 2024, a 32% increase over the previous year and the highest since the 1,634 carried out in 2015. The real total was far higher, Amnesty added, because its figure did not include thousands believed to have been executed in China, the world’s biggest executioner, or North Korea and Vietnam. Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, which accounted for 91% of executions worldwide, were responsible for the increase. Iraq almost quadrupled its executions from at least 16 to at least 63 and Saudi Arabia doubled its yearly total from 172 to at least 345.
Iran executed 119 more people than in 2023, raising its tally to at least 972 – a figure that included 30 women and represented 64% of the global total. All known executions in Iraq were for terrorism offences, while about half of those in Iran were for drug-related offences. Other countries executions increased included Egypt (from eight in 2023 to 13 last year); Spore, where executions nearly doubled (from five to nine) &
Yemen, where the total more than doubled from at least 15 to at least 38. The total 25 executions in US was one more than in 2023 & most since 2018. The period studied covers Joe Biden’s last year in office. His successor, Donald Trump, has said he aims to “vigorously pursue” the death penalty as a tool to protect people “from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters”.
Only 15 countries were known to have executed people in 2024, the lowest on record for the second year running, Amnesty said, adding that 113 countries were now fully abolitionist and 145 had abolished the death penalty in law or in practice. The campaign organisation also noted that several countries had legally limited their use of the death penalty, and that for the first time, more than two-thirds of all UN member states had voted in favour of a resolution on a moratorium. Amnesty International’s secretary general, said it was clear countries that retained death penalty were an “isolated minority”. She added that tide was turning against “a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment”.

Sanaa (EFE).- United States warplanes launched at least 25 air strikes on Monday against Houthi rebel positions on the front line with Yemen’s internationally recognized government forces south of the strategic Red Sea city of Hodeidah.
Al-Masirah television, a platform for the rebel movement, said in a brief statement that the wave of bombardments had targeted the Tuhayta district since Monday morning without giving further details. It's
highest number of strikes by US forces on a single Houthi-controlled district since Washington launched an air campaign against the Shia group on Mar. 15 military capabilities is deter it from launching op against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, strikes in Tuhayta, about 100 km (62 miles) south of Hodeidah, come as reports that Yemeni govt forces & allied groups could move to seize the strategic city with US air cover, so-called Joint Forces, a group of anti-Houthi armed groups backed by the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, are on the other side of Tuhayta.
This formation reported the attacks on its website, noting that the US bombings targeted rebel sites and barracks in various parts of Tuhayta. “The strikes were followed by successive explosions that rocked the area, probably caused by strikes on Houthi weapons depots,” the Joint Forces said, adding that the bombings were “concentrated on the front lines” near the pro-government group’s positions.
They also noted that these attacks came “at a time when the southern districts of the province have witnessed significant Houthi movements in recent weeks, including the deployment of large military reinforcements consisting of hundreds of fighters and vehicles in the clash areas.”
The Joint Forces also reported that the insurgents “continued to intensify the planting of landmines in areas close to the front lines south of Hodeidah.” In recent months, the Houthis have reinforced their positions south of Hodeidah to counter a possible ground assault by pro-government forces to retake the vital port city, one of the most strategic sites held by the Iran-backed rebels.
