How do we retire well in S'pore?
#1

People are social beings who thrive on connecting with others. The fear of boredom, loneliness, depression and cognitive decline during retirement is real. Can retirees advise those about to call time on their careers how to build up meaningful relationships to enjoy a purpose-driven retirement?

It is my firm belief that the most important way to enjoy a meaningful retirement is to have a plan in place before we call time on our career. We need to consider what we want out of life after retiring. What will we enjoy doing, but never had the time to do while we were working full-time? What are the new opportunities out there to render much needed assistance i.e. doing volunteer work? How will we maintain contact with people like we used to do at the office? Are these activities enough to fill our days?

The single or poor elderly are the worst hit

PAP really need 20 YEARS to fic their own mistakes

For now, vote for Opposition

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

If we retire at 63 and the average life span of a S'porean male is 83, then we need to have enough savings and investments to last us at least 20 years. Without this, we just have to continue working. That is why we see so many seniors still working as cleaners, collecting cardboard and doing other menial jobs simply because they do not have enough set aside to retire in the most expensive city in the world.

1. Life expectancy for male S'porean is 83 years
2. Current age 54 years for example
3. Savings and investments must last 29 years
4. Current savings and investments divided by 29 years
5. You get your budget for each year (taking into account inflation)

The house is a roof over our heads.

It is a fact that the wealthy have more options to occupy their free time after they retire. I notice many retirees enjoying their golf, tennis, bowling, swimming, enjoying a sauna, reading, eating and watching movies at their country and town clubs. Many also travel, shop, eat out and have hobbies that all cost money. Where do the poor elderly go to pass the day? I only see them at void decks, coffee shops, hawker centres, public libraries, community clubs etc.

If the house can be converted to real money value

Then HDB must allow those above 50 or 55 years old to

buy smaller units 2 SIZE down.

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

to retire in expensive singapore is a luxury.

retirement is not a necessity in singapore.

your question is about luxury.

Every person will eventually lose the mental and/or physical capacity to continue working whether he possesses enough life savings to retire or not.

You are referring to S'poreans who fell on hard times i.e. retrenchment or poor health and subsequent unemployment or underemployment. There are others who simply do not earn enough to retire. For those who prepared for retirement decades ago, and are on track financially to stop working, they have to consider whether they should or are ready to.

assuming you have nothing (no cpf, no house) except cash in bank.

how much cash do you need to retire ?

if you need more than $200K, it is considered a luxury.

Even when we have enough money set aside to stop working, many retirees fall into depression and lose their purpose in life when they finally decide to call it a day.

because these retirees are not aware or see people who are worse than them.

ask these retirees to visit old folk homes where old people are abandoned by their families.
ask these retirees to visit people who live in one room rented flats.
ask these retirees to visit the home of cardboard pickers.

then these retirees will know that retirement is a luxury.

It is human tendency to compare themselves to those who are more fortunate. I have learned to count my blessings and name them one by one. After doing that, I feel so blessed indeed.

you need to see with your own eyes, then you will learn.

if you read channelnewsasia or strait times from young, you will learn from the govt that there is no poverty or poor people in singapore.

then you will keep thinking how to retire better and better without knowing retirement is a luxury.

I think we should segregate the Born Citizens VS Foreigners

Foreigners all can afford to be jobless for 10 years and

most retire in luxury back home because SGD Conversion rate is strong

Over the decades, they have likely saved SGD50,000 property taxes, too
