Up until last year, Israel and Iran were engaged in a “shadow war.” Iran attacked Israel through proxy forces like Hezbollah and Hamas, while Israel focused on assassinating key leaders and destroying specific facilities. However, they never directly attacked each other.
Israel, the US and Iran have managed to keep the conflict from escalating into an all-out war by allowing each other to save face. We can say that we have seen repeated incidents of “staged” attacks.
However, it shouldn’t be overlooked that all parties have continually crossed the line. Iran’s retaliatory strike on US bases in 2020 was the first time the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was born in the Islamic revolution of 1979, mobilized its regular military to directly strike US facilities.
Iran’s attack against Israel last year was also the first time official Iranian forces struck Israel since the formation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979.
