I feared going to school. Until now, I’m not sure what motivated them to pick on me.

In Secondary 1 and 2, Ms Laurene Chung endured verbal bullying in school that followed her home, in the form of hateful anonymous comments on social media.

Teenage bullying is a growing concern in Singapore, observers say, especially with new tools of social media and texting that have opened up ways for bullies to hurt people. https://str.sg/Gywi

Back in 2015, a former Raffles Girls' School (RGS) student, Ms Cheryl Tan, claimed that the school’s failure to protect her from bullying caused her distress and eventually forced her to leave, shows that such relational aggression exists even in so-called prestigious schools. Bullying affects students' sense of security and is one of the most underreported safety problems that have long-lasting harmful effects on victims. I certainly hope that RGS was not too quick to dismiss Cheryl’s complaints after conducting their own investigations. Female victims are more likely to report bullying since maintaining good relationships in school is extremely important, and they are far more sensitive than boys. By and large, girls’ schools experience far less problems with physical bullying, as the fairer sex is more subtle when targeting their victims. In many ways, psychological bullying destroys the victim’s self-esteem far quicker than any physical abuse. It appears that RGS' commitment and involvement in addressing Cheryl’s complaint was lacking. The manner in which the school summarily dismissed her claims shows that it was unwilling to invest the time and energy to comprehensively tackle it.
