India celebrates its 75th anniversary of independence from Great Britain on Aug. 15th

It is remarkable that India still exists at all. Today we take that for granted. But in 1947 there was no telling whether the country, with its great social diversity and enormous economic problems, would be able to hold together.

This repeatedly required political compromises. Pakistan, which gained independence a day before India, could not. The country fell apart in 1971 when Bangladesh seceded.

Modi is a welcome guest in Western capitals. He is considered a strategic partner, especially in view of the rise of China and its hegemonic ambitions in the Indo-Pacific . While there has been muted criticism of Modi's autocratic style of government, this does not affect common interests vis-à-vis China.
