Indranee and Leong Mun Wai over Singapore's fertility rate
#1

Mr Leong accused Ms Indranee of avoiding his questions, and challenged her on why Singapore does not compare itself to countries such as France, which has a total fertility rate (TFR) above 1.5.

You have quoted a downward trend in the TFR as a global phenomenon. But other countries are able to maintain it at above 1.5 but we are 0.97 - does that difference mean it is a responsibility that the government has to take?” he asked.

"You cannot just say that ‘oh everything is dropping, we can’t help it’, more or less, you’re saying we can’t help it, that cannot be the case, because then we will be really running towards extinction."

The two also clashed over whether Singapore should set a target for the country’s total fertility rate.

Ms Indranee said she did not see how having a target would do anything to raise the fertility rate, whereas Mr Leong said the government cannot implement policies without aiming for a certain result.

For things like infrastructure or economic goals, it makes sense to set a target, said Ms Indranee.

“But when it comes to emotions and when it comes to things like fertility, when it comes to personal decisions, those are very hard to quantify,” she said.

Core Point:

Singapore's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is a serious concern and requires multifaceted solutions, going beyond just financial incentives, to address the complex factors influencing couples' decisions about having children.

Key Points:

Low and Declining TFR: Singapore's TFR is critically low (0.97 in 2023) and has been consistently below replacement level (2.1) for decades. This poses significant long-term challenges for the country's social and economic future.

Financial Incentives Not Enough: While financial support like the Baby Bonus helps, they aren't the primary driver of decisions about parenthood.

Complex Factors at Play: Couples are influenced by factors such as:

Societal Pressures: Stress of modern living, societal expectations

Career Aspirations: Especially for women, balancing career and family

Financial Security: Cost of raising children, housing costs

Relationship Stability: Concerns about long-term commitment.

Government's Multi-Pronged Approach: The government is taking a holistic approach to address these factors, including:

Creating a Supportive Environment: Strengthening social support networks, promoting flexible work arrangements, and fostering family-friendly workplaces.

Promoting Marriage: Encouraging and supporting stable relationships, recognizing that marriage remains the foundation for most families.

Reviewing Policies: Continuously evaluating and adapting policies to meet the evolving needs of families.

Call for Societal Shift: A societal shift is needed to value and support parenthood, and to reduce the pressures that discourage couples from having children.

Summary:

The article discusses Singapore's alarmingly low Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and the government's efforts to address it. It emphasizes that while financial incentives are helpful, they are insufficient to reverse the trend. Instead, a multifaceted approach is needed that tackles the complex factors influencing couples' decisions about parenthood, including societal pressures, career aspirations, financial security, and relationship stability. The government is working on creating a supportive environment, promoting marriage, and reviewing policies. Ultimately, a societal shift in attitudes and values is crucial to making parenthood more attractive and sustainable in Singapore.

It’s difficult to quantify because Singaporeans are finding it difficult to live with the rising costs of living. On top of that many are not secured in their jobs knowing they can be replaced by cheaper foreign workers that the government import to boost the population statistics.
Floodgates has been opened and there’s no turning back. Some of the policies implemented are wrong.

forget about fertility rate.

focus on unemployment rate for PMETs above 40 because more singaporeans are getting older and they cannot find jobs after 40.

number for above 40 PMETs will grow bigger over the years and more will become unemployed/under unemployed.

PAP needs to stop import of foreigners and reserve more jobs for the older PMETs.

Otherwise, they will again waste time and refuse to answer directly

and act blur to give irrelevant stupid answers

We have the Famous Sotong Blur Queen of Singapore

why Indranee refuses to set target for fertility rate ?

without goal or target, how to know the solutions are working ?

how can she earns $million dollars pay without goal to meet ?

everyone can be PAP minister if there is no goal to meet.

But Singaporean goes on holidays alot.  They prefer travelling than making babies. No matter what incentives the government the fertility rate won't increased.

The main cause of the problem is gender equality and high cost of living.

Traveling for holidays incur costs only when they travel. Having babies you have to feed them for a lifetime till they are able to stand on their own to make a career and living for themselves.
To bring up a child you have to clothe and feed the child. You have to pay for their education. These will probably costs more as years go by.

Exactly. That's why I say no point giving out incentives to induce increase birth rates. Government has been coming out with numerous incentives since 1990. Still birth rates ain't improving.

Why because the cost for having a kid is very high.
Abit of incentive not enough to solve the problem and furthermore universities also priority given to FT
