During the run up to every General Election for the past few decades, the ruling party has been accused of unfair electoral practices such as gerrymandering, to maintain a significant majority in Parliament. As the Elections Dept is not an independent body, but forms part of the executive branch under the Prime Minister, critics opine that it enables the incumbent party to decide electoral boundaries, based on poll results in the previous election.

Gerrymandering establishes a political advantage for the incumbent by influencing electoral boundaries to create partisan advantaged districts. Such electoral engineering appears to hand the ruling party the upper hand at the elections. Ruling incumbents adopt gerrymandering to redraw the electoral map to give them a disproportionate leg up.

There shd be an independent committee to look into the electoral boundaries. In other countries, if I am not wrong, the High Court hv this power and acted in good faith with impartiality.

Non-partisan organizations are authorised to set up constituency boundaries in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, to prevent electoral engineering.

In 2018, Woody Goh warned that ministers are not paid enough and that S'pore will be confronted with the problem of getting competent people to join the Govt. He is afraid that if there is no gerrymandering, mediocre people will join the Govt and take away some share of the money in the pie enjoyed exclusively by the MIW.
