This relates back to what I had speculated in the early days of the war that Kyiv was just a distraction and Russia's real objective was Mariupol where the Nazi Azov Batallion HQ was located
Indeed, Russia first deployed Chechen forces towards Kyiv to pin down Ukranian troops there while LDPR forces attacked Mariupol. This trickery left the 10,000 Azov troops isolated without any reinforcement.
Later on after the Azov were routed and started retreating into Azovstal, Chechens were withdrawn from Kyiv outskirts and redeployed to Mariupol
Kyiv was never a Russian objective
