Japan Wants Camp David Summit to Support Fukushima Water Release
#1

Japanese media on Monday said Japanese officials are trying to persuade their Korean and U.S. counterparts of the safety of the release of treated wastewater from the stricken nuclear plant to decide on a release date.

The aim of the summit is to present a united front in the Asia-Pacific region against China and Russia, but Japan is already straining the bonds with its insistence on putting the issue on the agenda.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday, "In conjunction with the summit meeting, Kishida plans to meet separately with U.S. President Joe Biden and [Korean] President Yoon Suk-yeol to explain himself that the discharge plan is based on scientific evidence and that safety has been ensured."

But the three leaders are meeting to demonstrate closer cooperation on defense and supply chain issues after a long chill between Korea and Japan, which has little to do with the wastewater release.
