Kishore Mahbubani is considered to be one of the brightest geostrategic thinkers in Asia. In an interview with Stefan Aust, the former ambassador from Singapore accuses the West of misjudging China out of arrogance. He considers the past 200 years to be an accident in history.

Kishore Mahbubani: The Chinese have their own political history, their own political traditions, and their own political culture. They know what works and what doesn't in China. From their point of view, a split two-party system like the one in the USA does not work for China. I'm not saying that's my point of view. But from their point of view, Chinese history proves that the people are best off under strong leadership, and that the lower fifty percent of the population, socially speaking, suffer when the leadership is divided. According to a study by the Harvard Kennedy School, approval of the Chinese Communist Party rose from 86 percent in 2003 to 93 percent in 2016. Why? Because in the last 40 years they had the best socio-economic development in their history.
Stefan Aust: Well, we know from German history that large parts of the population are in agreement with dictatorship and censorship as long as they live under a dictatorship.
