Queenborough Cemetery was operated by a private company from 1873 until 1917, when the Hobart City Council took over. The last burial was in 1934. Some it over, those six decades, it's believed between 9,000 and 13,000 people were buried there.

Births Deaths & Marriage records, headstone transcripts (not spatially identified), wills, newspaper articles (e.g. funeral notices), undertakers’ records (incomplete), osteological analysis and even archaeological evidence. In many instances it has not been possible to determine the separate identity of individuals within family plots. 1,973 individuals have been exhumed, with 1,717 (87%) identified.

The remains have been transferred into new coffins for reburial at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery (expected to be in late January). Their names will be included on new memorials at Cornelian Bay and the Peel Street Memorial Reserve (Sandy Bay). A service will be held at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery on a date to be advised (probably late March). Details of the memorial service will be posted on this website ahead of the service at https://www.hutchins.tas.edu.au/former-q...humations/.

News: Archaeologists complete largest mass exhumation in Australian history from old cemetery in  Hutchins School Australia's largest mass exhumation uncovers secrets, scandals and grave robbery. During building works at The Hutchins School in Hobart in March 2024, bones were found and construction halted — leading to the ultimate discovery of almost 2,000 bodies that were believed to have been moved from the old graveyard over which the school is located. An archaeological team undertook what is believed to be the largest mass exhumation in Australian history, digging up the bodies and attempting to identify them — hampered by appalling burial practices and poor record-keeping.

What's next?
The team have revealed how they solved the "giant puzzle" — and have released publicly the names of the people they have managed to identify from the graves. Rob McEwan clearly remembers the day they found the bodies at the construction site.
The Hutchins School principal is pointing to his school's master plan, to an area that was set for redevelopment in March. Rob McEwan looks over with plans for construction laid out on a desk in an office. Rob McEwan says it was "such an important moment to see ground being broken". (ABC News: Jake Grant) I was in my office, looking out my window and the excavators were just in the top corner of the site," Mr McEwan said. His excitement was short-lived.

The discovery would kickstart nine months of meticulous excavation and identification, as archaeologists tried to piece together who lay beneath the surface. A construction site at the Hutchins School local council was supposed to arrange the exhumation of the bodies at the cemetery before the school took over the site in the 1960s. (ABC News: Maren Preuss)

At final count, 1,973 people's remains have been exhumed from The Hutchins School's old hockey field, in what is believed to be the largest single exhumation project in Australia. How could this possibly happen and what do you do when you find hundreds of bodies without headstones?.

Bodies stacked 'six people deep'

Mr Williams pulled together a team of archaeologists, archaeology students and contractors to exhume the remains and identify as many of them as possible.

"Off the top of my head, I thought we could be dealing with a couple of hundred [people's remains]," he said.

“Its very rare to hear of two people dying together like this. I only encountered one or two such cases after 10 years in this line of work.” There was a similar incident in 2022, when a 70-year-old man & his 92-year-old mother were found dead in their Tampines Street 22 flat. His fears came true on Dec 15, 2024, when police discovered the decomposing bodies of an elderly couple. RIP Wilted_rose

Said Mr Rahman: “My company attends between two and three cases every week involving seniors dying alone at home...lehh. His company is one of three firms in S'pore that are engaged by town councils to clean up a flat after such cases. Sleepy

Competition for Jobs

Most S'poreans believe that the influx of foreign workers creates increased competition for jobs; particularly in certain sectors like IT and Finance. In reality, foreign PMEs are in many other sectors like sales, marketing, HR etc. This has led to lower salaries and fewer opportunities for true blue locals.

Strain on Resources

The growing population in such a small island with the influx of foreigners, puts a strain on resources like healthcare, transportation and housing. Overcrowding results in longer wait times for essential services.

High Cost of Living

S'pore consistently ranks as 1 of the most expensive cities in the world. This is because of high housing costs, taxes, and the prices of essential goods and services. This is a significant burden on S'poreans; especially younger people.
