Indonesia will most likely roll out Asean’s first ever HSR service next month, as early as Aug 15, a fitting tribute to its 78th independence day on Aug 17.

Tsuge, who is now retired as company chairman, went on to describe the shinkansen as the backbone of the Japanese economy.

“We can say that the Japanese economy would not have developed the way we see it today without the Tokaido shinkansen,” he said.

“As one can see from the long-term plans of Thailand and Indonesia, governments do incorporate rail, especially HSR – which has been shown in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan – as an important catalyst in regional economic development, other than facilitating modern requirements for mobility that must also be efficient, sustainable and low-carbon,” said Datuk Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal, CEO of MyHSR Corporation Sdn Bhd.
