GE15: Pakatan has exceeded 112-seat requirement for simple majority, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan has exceeded the required 112-seat simple majority required to form the next government, says its chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“We have exceeded, it’s comfortable,” said Anwar when met by reporters as left the hall after holding a press conference at the Seri Pacific Hotel here on Monday (Nov 21).
He was asked to comment on the majority that Pakatan has secured.
Earlier at the press conference, Anwar responded to Umno’s Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein’s criticisms of the proposed Barisan-Pakatan pact.
“I believe there is no DAP or Pakatan government here. It’s a coalition government, a unity government. I believe he (Hishammuddin) has to revise his views,” said Anwar.
Anwar also said the statutory declarations (SDs) signed by certain Umno MPs in support of Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister might have adverse effects on their party membership.
“It is seen to go against the agreement with Barisan. There will be adverse effects for MPs who go against this agreement by submitting SDs in support of Perikatan, as stated in Barisan Nasional’s statement earlier,” he said.
On Muhyiddin claiming that he has the numbers, Anwar said the question has to be directed to Perikatan.
To further questions about the unity government in Perak, Anwar said it is a good start as this shows that Barisan and Pakatan can unite to form a government.

Umno may not have a future if it backs PN, say analysts
PETALING JAYA: Umno risks its future if it decides to back Perikatan Nasional (PN) instead of Pakatan Harapan (PH), says an analyst.
University of Tasmania’s James Chin said this was because Bersatu is eager to oust Umno as the main Malay party in the country, adding that the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party was resentful of the latter.
He added that this resentment extends to the leadership of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former prime minister Najib Razak.
“If they join PN to form the government, they will be totally overshadowed, and might even be swallowed up by Bersatu,” he told FMT.
Chin went on to say that if Umno backs PH, it could regain some legitimacy in the long run.
It would also be seen as “respecting” the wishes of the majority of voters as PH won popular support. The coalition also won the most seats, 82, in the general election.
“Joining PH is what people want, as they have the largest number of seats.”
Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Fauzi Abdul Hamid said Umno would be relegated to a “very junior partner” in the government and be bullied by PAS and Bersatu, which are the key parties in PN.
“Bersatu, and Muhyiddin in particular, is out to destroy Umno and in order to make itself the de facto Malay party. With Umno having about 30 seats, they will be sidelined in Parliament.
“Umno has to succumb to PAS and Bersatu, and have to be subservient to their plans, which will be humiliating for them.
“At least in PH, Umno will have a niche carved out for them, a void that was left by Bersatu in tackling the rural and middle-class Malays when Bersatu was with PH in the past,” he told FMT.
Fauzi said the ball was now in the court of individual Umno and Barisan Nasional MPs to decide who they wanted to pick, without fearing being sacked, as the leadership appears to be keen to join PH.
Earlier today, Anwar said he was optimistic that PH will be able to form a unity government with BN, adding that it was “not a PH or a DAP administration.”

SO, no party had secured a simple majority to enable it to form a new government in the aftermath of the 15th General Election (GE15).
Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he has the simple majority to form a government. This time around, I believe that he has.
Barisan Nasional (BN) is not in a position to impose any unacceptable conditions to PH (read this as the UMNO court cluster will have to go through the judicial process and there will be no political interference in the decision of the courts!).
The reality is that PAS which is a coalition partner of Perikatan Nasional (PN) has clinched 49 seats. More than DAP in the second place with 40 seats.
Any coalition that includes PN will see at the very least, PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang as Deputy Prime Minister. At worst, even Hadi as Prime Minister (PM).
For many of us, this is a fate worse than death. Anything else is better than that.
What is better then?
PH, BN, Sarawak, and Sabah together in a coalition of the willing against the treacherous PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin and the greedy Hadi.
What about the oft-repeated stance of PKR/PH not to work with BN? When push comes to shove, BN is anytime a better choice to PN with a Hadi as DPM or – God forbid – PM?
What about the oft-repeated stance of BN not to work with DAP? When push comes to shove, BN will have to find ways to work with DAP or face being in the Opposition for the next five years – a fate that is also worse than death for politicians.
Throughout history, there haven’t been any events which indicated that DAP has betrayed or cheated any other parties as claimed. That narrative has to change.
What about Zahid and the UMNO court cluster? The wheels of justice have been turning, albeit too slowly … and will continue to turn until justice is served.
Everything else is negotiable.
Who will be PM, who will be DPM, how many DPMs – the other nuts and bolts needed to hold the coalition together – can be ironed out on the negotiation table.
If the parties are courageous enough and generous enough to and with each other – and if they remember that the rakyat will be watching them all the time – they will surely prevail against the betrayal of that man called Muhyiddin and the greed of that obnoxious Hadi.
Of course, maybe, Anwar is talking about a coalition with parties from Sabah and Sarawak. Only time will tell but a reminder for Anwar is that better the devil you know than the devil you do not!

In a statement Sarawak human rights activist Peter John Jaban said it will be difficult for the christians here to accept a coalition with Perikatan National, as even its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had insulted the community.
" Words have an effect and Sarawak voters have voted for a moderate multi racial society, it has put its trust in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) so for the party to consider an alliance with PN is really unacceptable," he said in a statement today.

He dismissed queries on what MIC’s position was between the two coalitions, saying the party will follow the BN Supreme Council’s decision.

Power over principle - BN seeks to maintain relevance, revive Umno, in new alliance with Pakatan Harapan
The move has been seen as a way for Umno and BN to maintain relevance after a miserable outing at the recent 15th General Elections ( GE15).
With all principles laid aside, it seems the need for power has taken precedence over everything else.
Sources inside the coalition have claimed that top leaders from Umno have basically agreed to the alliance and it will be a matter of time before the marriage of convenience between the two parties will be announced.

PETALING JAYA: A Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leader has hinted that it will only choose who to back to form the government after Barisan Nasional (BN) decides between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
According to The Star, Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Tiong King Sing said it was still unclear which coalition had the numbers to form the next federal government.
He added that GPS did not want to get involved in the dispute over BN’s support.
“Let’s say BN doesn’t work with PN, then PN will not be able to form the government even with GPS’ support. They have a problem, so we’ll let them settle it among themselves first.
“They have to find their own way to resolve it. Why do we want to get involved? For GPS, we will discuss among ourselves and the premier (Abang Johari Openg) will make the final decision,” he said.

I take a break watching the WC to post this, so better read it, then you will understand (or be confused still) by the STATE OF CONFUSION so far....
The final tally of the 221 parliamentary seats (minus Padang Serai) following the conclusion of the 15th General Election (GE15) saw no one coalition being able to form a government.
Barisan Nasional (BN) has 30 seats and the announcements of which of the coalitions they plan to join have left Malaysians frustrated.
At first, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) said they would join hands with Perikatan Nasional (PN), BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to form a government. PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed having discussed with GPS and GRS but did not mention BN, instead only saying he also had the support of ‘several other Dewan Rakyat members’.
To this, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there had been no discussions that translated into BN having agreed to this collaboration. He also said all BN MPs who won in GE15 had signed a declaration (akujanji) giving him the mandate to determine any political collaboration in forming the government.
On the other side of the fence, Pakatan Harapan (PH) said they have the numbers to form a government but chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not say who they would be cooperating with to hit a minimum of 112 seats.
This morning, BN and PH leaders were spotted at the Seri Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, supposedly for a discussion on forming a government together.
The purported ‘Pacific Plan’ did not sit well with several BN leaders who insisted they would not work with PH. Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he stood by this decision and was willing to be sacked for it.
Ahmad Zahid, in a press conference said the 30 BN MPs were bound to the decision made by the BN leadership in such matters.
A group chat screenshot later went viral in which it was alleged that Umno vice president and caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said he too did not want to work with Ph and was willing to be sacked.
There was no confirmation on the validity of the screenshot until Ismail Sabri’s daughter Nina Sabrina posted it on her own Instagram Stories, putting a red tick next to what her father allegedly wrote. She captioned the post: ‘Biar tak berkuasa. Jangan tak berprinsip.’ (Better to be powerless than to be without principles.)
Adding even more confusion to an already confusing situation is Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan who took to Facebook to suggest that PH and PN form a government and BN would be the opposition.
He said BN accepted that it had been rejected by the people and because of that, the party has no power to form a government.
“I suggest PH and PN collaborate to form a government because they have amassed a higher amount of votes. BN is prepared to be the opposition who is responsible in being the check and balance for the new government,” he said.
MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong also shared on Facebook that he did not attend any meeting with PH leaders present at Seri Pacific. He said he only attended a meeting with the BN chairman and BN MPs.
On the state front, Wee also said there had been no discussion by the top leadership of BN on the party working with PH to form a state government. However, the collaboration did materialise as Datuk Saarani Mohamad of BN was later sworn in as Perak Menteri Besar.
With the new deadline of 2pm tomorrow given by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for political parties to submit the numbers and their PM candidate, the question that lingers is why does it look like BN leaders do not have a WhatsApp group to hash things out but prefer posting confusing messages and announcing confusing statements to the rakyat?

PETALING JAYA: Some netizens have taken to social media to warn MCA, a member of Barisan Nasional, against a BN alliance with Perikatan Nasional to form a new government following the inconclusive general election.
A Facebook user said MCA should carefully consider the matter, for fear that the Islamic party PAS, a member of PN, would impose restrictive rules on non-Muslims.
“Do you prefer PAS or DAP? Think first, sir. It’s better for MCA to swallow their pride and support Pakatan Harapan. What’s next, a ban on Genting Highlands, no beer?” the Facebook user posted.
A Twitter user named Shaun said: “MIC and MCA, have you forgotten there is PAS in PN? And they have grown so big now, not scared of getting slaughtered?” he said.
Another Facebook user named Adam, saying MCA should “do something honourable for once”, asked: “How can you work with the extremists in PAS?”
MCA was also warned that it would face a worse fate in the next general election if BN works with PN to form the new government.
“I am also wondering what is MCA’s stand now? Will they support PN/PAS this round? Most Chinese are in fear after the results. If MCA doesn’t stand with us, they will lose even more next time,” a Facebook user said.
One netizen pointed out that MCA president Wee Ka Siong may not have any other choice but to concede to BN working with PH instead of PN for voters’ sake.
“To be honest, Wee likely has no choice but to support the PH-BN cooperation. Their voter base would probably be outraged if MCA decides to pull out of BN and work together with PN,” he said.

To further questions about the unity government in Perak, Anwar said it is a good start as this shows that Barisan and Pakatan can unite to form a government.
When asked about the deputy prime minister candidate, Anwar said; “let me assume the premiership first.”
Former Ketereh MP Tan Sri Annuar Musa today said that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi does not have the power to fire Umno MPs who sign statutory declarations (SD) to support a Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal government.

According to Anwar, no other names for premiership was mentioned during a meeting between Pakatan and Barisan top leaders in Seri Pacific Hotel yesterday.
“They (Barisan) did not suggest any other names in the discussion. But, (for) my preferred choice for deputy prime minister, let me assume premiership first,” Anwar said at a press conference after the meeting.
The unprecedented meeting between Barisan and Pakatan top leaders took place between 10am and noon yesterday.
Anwar said there were no other conditions set by Barisan and he assured that there would not be any interference in the ongoing court cases of certain leaders.

Set aside egos, join PH govt, Zaid tells Umno-BN
PETALING JAYA: Zaid Ibrahim has called on all Umno leaders to put aside their egos and show party discipline by joining forces with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to form the next federal government.
“Anwar Ibrahim, with 82 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, is sure to become prime minister in the next day or so. He has given Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) the honour of joining his government.
“We ought to be grateful to him and to (Umno) party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who has given the party some oxygen to survive,” said the former law minister in a video on Facebook this morning.
He called on party leaders, especially those who are opposed to accepting PH’s offer, to consider carefully Umno’s options.
“It is not easy being in opposition. We have been the opposition in Kelantan for 32 years already. What progress have we made? What have we been able to do as opposition?” he asked.
The reality, he said, is that the party has suffered a “total loss” in several states.
The recently concluded 15th general election saw Umno completely wiped out in seven states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Melaka.
In the face of that, Zaid said, staying in government, even in a more limited role, was Umno’s best chance to save itself from “oblivion”.
He said the present offer to join the government has been made to Umno and BN members who have been elected to Parliament.
“Those who did not contest, were dropped or lost should stay out of the conversation. Do not confuse the issue,” he said.
“Some who have been leaders and ministers appear to be acting in an uncontrollable manner and are behaving like prima donnas.”
Zaid called for party leaders to be mature, and not emotional, in their decision-making.
He said the essence of the anti-hopping law was that parliamentarians must show party discipline by acting in accordance with instructions handed down by the party leader and whip.
“Today, the party leader and whip is Zahid Hamidi,” he said.
He said now was not the time for them to raise grouses about whether Zahid ought to remain president or question party policies.
“Wait two or three months, and thrash it out then,” he said.
Umno’s constitution was amended earlier this year to allow the party to defer its elections to no later than six months after the date of a general election.
“For now, we have an obligation to form the next government. If that government is to be led by Anwar Ibrahim, then that is something we must accept.
“So long as our country remains without a government, our economy will lose billions of ringgit. That is something that we, as responsible leaders, must avoid,” he said.

The Umno Pulai division chief reminded the newly elected MPs they signed a pledge to give party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi the mandate to determine any political cooperation in the formation of the government before they were confirmed as candidates for the general election.
“I think the BN MPs who oppose Zahid on this matter actually want to be fired on purpose so they can become independent MPs and can support a prime ministerial candidate who is not backed by BN,” he said in a statement.
“I urge these BN MPs to resign if they are sincere in their political struggle and for the sake of Umno and BN’s future.”
Nur Jazlan also called on BN MPs not to play “dirty politics” and “manipulate” BN members and the public by calling for Zahid’s resignation.

Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) cooperation in Perak and Pahang is a strong indication of their possible federal-level tie-up.
A cooperation between PH, which won 82 parliamentary seats in the 15th General Election (GE15), and BN, which won 30 seats, would give them the minimum of 112 seats needed to form a coalition government.
Analysts say a collaboration between the former nemesis in a unity government was a real possibility and a two-coalition cooperation would be less complicated than a multi-pact one.
“They have no choice but to work with each other, at least for the next four to five years.
“What we are seeing in Perak is likely to be adopted in the federal government,” Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said, referring to PH and BN forming the Perak state government.
He said PH giving way to BN in Perak for the menteri besar post was an indicator that BN might agree to PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim becoming prime minister.
“Of course, the difference is huge when it comes to forming the federal government. BN may ask that the prime minister’s position be held on a rotation basis.”
The coalitions are also working together in Pahang, with BN’s 16 state seats and PH’s eight.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) won 17 of the 42 state seats in Pahang.
Combined, PH and BN won the popular vote in GE15, receiving support from 9,243,988 Malay-sians, which is 59.7 per cent of the total 15,491,953 ballots cast. PH secured 37.5 per cent of the total ballots and BN 22.2 per cent.
Other coalitions — PN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sarawak (GRS) — polled 5,505,955 votes, or 35.5 per cent, of the total ballots.
While PN has been public about its confidence in forming the government since Saturday night, PH and BN have been holding talks away from the media glare.
Just before noon yesterday, PH and BN members of parliament converged at Seri Pacific Hotel, a stone’s throw away from the Umno headquarters, to finalise talks to meet the deadline set by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to form a government before for 2pm today.
The deadline was extended for 24 hours following an appeal from the coalitions for more time.
At press time, PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seemed to have decided to work with BN and was ready to do away with the Pakatan Harapan name and logo.
Observers suggested that the unity government that would be formed would be known as Harapan Nasional or Barisan Harapan.
Anwar gave an assurance that PH would not interfere with court cases involving BN leaders if the two coalitions form a cooperation, as the judiciary should remain independent.
“Court cases are under the judiciary, an independent body. We will not interfere with the judicial process,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
DAP, which won 40 parliamentary seats for PH, through its chairman, Lim Guan Eng, said the party would leave it to the PH top leadership to decide on the cooperation.
“As part of the PH coalition, if PH and BN are forming a coalition government, we will support it.”
