Malaysian Catholics exhaust their savings to see the pope

The flight and hotel accommodation would cost about RM1,208 (US$279) and Lasmin’s husband, a truck driver in an oil palm plantation, was reluctant to spend that much money.

“I thought it was not meant to be,” the mother of a 14-year-old daughter told UCA News.

Then, on second thought, he told her to use their savings, and if they weren’t enough, he could borrow money from his boss.

“I am so grateful to God,” Lasmin said as she prepared for the nine-hour bus ride from Lahad Datu to Sabah’s capital Kota Kinabalu. She couldn’t afford the flight.

“Even if I have to eat mee cup noodles when in Singapore, that’s okay,” she said, referring to instant cup noodles, which are one of the cheapest meals available.

Lasmin said she’ll manage to survive somehow until Sept. 13, when she leaves Singapore on the return journey.

The passes were snapped up fast in the other dioceses but not so in Sandakan. Only 78 seats were taken up.

When there was a second allocation of another 100 seats for each of the Malaysian dioceses, the Sandakan one offered these seats to the other dioceses and so Sandakan diocese now has a 146-strong contingent.

One of the main reasons  for the low take-up rate in Sandakan was that many could not afford the trip.
