TOKYO -- Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Friday downplayed China's claims to much of the South China Sea, arguing it is more important to avoid clashing with the country led by "ambitious" President Xi Jinping.

"You can claim" the South China Sea, he said in a fireside-style chat at the annual Future of Asia conference in Tokyo. "We don't have to go to war against you because of your claim."

What he said made sense.  If there is a dispute,  it indicates that both have a share of the property.  If an agreement can be reached to share, good.  They can either leave it as 50:50 share and then jointly develop the property; if cannot,  wait until one government is so weak and badly needs money,  just go and buy over the shares. If there is a war, it might cost much more even if you win the war.
