The majority of CECAs are not high SES foreigners, though some of them make enough to rent a condo unit and buy a car. The ultra rich non-S'poreans are those who set up family offices in SG and buy up freehold land from our limited supply after they are given a fast pass to a pink IC.

I beg to differ since papayas cushion a fall by a fellow commuter in a way that durians and bubble gum simply cannot. If a male commuter trips, he will be eternally grateful to the woman in the grey top for providing her "airbags" as cushioning.

When that happens, the guy shd say sorry no offence thank you! And the papaya gal would reply you are most welcome!

The man who falls should be grateful to the woman providing the airbags. "Thank you" and not "Sorry" should be blurted out.

I have a colleague who lives in a 4-room flat in Clementi, but drives a brand new BMW 5 series. According to him, he will never be able to afford a condo, so since life is short, he spent on a continental car instead.

S'poreans want to upgrade out of the HDB heartlands simply because You Only Live Once (YOLO). By the time many couples save enough to buy a condo, they may not have many more years to work. After they retire, they will have trouble paying for the maintenance fees that are used to upkeep the common areas, the structure of the buildings, and any shared facilities. The monthly cost may range from $500 to over $1,000 based on the location, number of units and size of the condo.

I know of someone who’s fired and given a golden handshake. With the money he bought a brandnew bmw s7. He explained that’s his dream since young, and if he didn’t get one he would never get one.

To each his own. I know of a person who lives in a penthouse at a Bukit Timah condo who drives a 9-year-old Toyota Altis. Apart from his home, he rents out another unit at the same development. He is a professional, but does not place too much emphasis on an outward show of wealth. He is also obviously not a car enthusiast.

This sounds like a coping mechanism for HDB dwellers.

You only live once so why deprive yourself of a condo and car if you are able to afford them while still gainfully employed? After you retire, you may sell away the car, and if the maintenance fees start eating into your life savings, consider leasing out your condo and renting a cheaper accommodation.

It is natural for a consumer to be poorer after making any kind of purchase. However, buying a property in land scarce SG is actually a prudent investment.

Buying a condo may be a major expenditure, but it is also a major investment. Buying a resale HDB unit with the clock ticking down on its remaining lease is investing in a depreciating asset. All private condominium units - whether they are on 99 or 999-year leases - possess a strata title, which stipulates the size of each apartment, including its undivided share of the land - including the swimming pool, tennis courts, gymnasium, carpark etc. - which the development occupies. Owners of condos may form their own committee to initiate a collective sale to a new developer whenever they wish to. If an agreement for an en bloc sale goes through, the buyer indemnifies the S'pore Land Authority to return the lease to its original 99-year tenure.

I am in total agreement with you. It all boils down to affordability. If a tycoon can afford a $50 million GCB, why should he be cooped up in a shoe box condo or HDB flat? If a rich person is able to splash $1 million on his dream Ferrari, why should he drive a Kia or Proton, or rely on the MRT and bus?

Young S'poreans are frustrated that prized possessions like a private residential property and car are constantly priced out of their reach because their promotion and annual wage increments simply cannot keep pace.
