MinLaw addresses misuse of court processes amid Prof Ben Leong’s defamation case

MinLaw clarified that abusing court processes to oppress or extort settlements is contempt of court. This follows media queries on a defamation suit against NUS academic Ben Leong, who highlighted the financial toll of defending himself under Singapore’s defamation laws.

Quote:This includes filing claims that are baseless but intended to harass or pressure defendants into settlements.
Minister of State for Law Murali Pillai had underscored the importance of these amendments during parliamentary debates on 13 November, stating that “egregious abuse of our court system” could erode public trust over time.
He added, “We also have a duty to ensure that our processes are not weaponised or abused.”

Imagine professor Ben Leong face a "personal financial  toll" to defebd hinself .....what about the popr people Raymond Ng and Iris Koh sued .....one of them has committed suicide.

They should  stop this.abuse of defamation lawsuits.

Thia.couple has been filing jne lawsuit after another agajnst people who criticise them for their business and anti vac activities.

The mkment they sue they other side faces financial pressure of needjng pay $50k to get a lawyer .and this cost cannot be fully recovered.

So the couple can keep using the legal system to make people.lose.$50K each time.

Why dont they do a preliminary assessment to see if the case is real.or not.

As for.defamation the couple in question have not build a good reputation so there is not much damage  given many already think poorly of them after their business and anti vac activities. They are vindictive people who hurt others and have caused alot of pain to other people

As usual our courts are slow to react to this type of systemic abuse. How many more must fall prey to this tyrannical couple before Justice is served? Sad

If Ben Leong is not involved then I may still sympathize the defendent. But Ben himself is no saint and is in fact an arrogant scum.

Evil scums not puerile scums...in my opinion.

They know every step of the way what they are doing to others
Including all those who lost money in Raymond Ng's vending machine scheme.

I see them as immature and infantile scums, always throwing a hissy fit at will.  But yes, they are evil scums too Angry
