The current shorter cycles between economic growth and downturn mean that employment opportunities are limited for fresh grads with fewer white collar jobs opening up to replace those of retiring employees. To compound matters, more companies are blaming ongoing business restructuring and softer economic conditions as the main reasons for laying-off older workers. A university degree was once seen as a ticket to a promising career as a PME as stringent entry requirements restricted tertiary education to only 26% of S'porean residents up to the year 2000. Currently, slightly more than half of this group consists of degree holders, and the numbers are climbing steadily. Is it any wonder why most employees feel no loyalty or affinity to their employers these days?
