I grew up only hearing Deepavali being said but in recent years, a three syllable word Diwali had appeared all over Singapore. Before that, I didn't even know that there was such a word. 

This shows how porous Singapore was and still is. 

It's like the Chinese language. We "true blue Han Singaporean" would speak Mandarin with our mother tongues’ influence for eg, we might ask an ah tiong 你几时来这里的？ whereas he would say 您什么时候到这里来的？and say it using the more polite and respectful 您。

Talking about your motherland, is it true that Guanyin migrated, if not physically, then at least as a goddess to be worshiped, from India to China? So Guanyin didn't speak any of the various Chinese dialects but perhaps Hindi right. I suppose that should make you proud...?

In 2004, 80% of the pupils at a rural Chinese school in Sepang were Chinese. Today, 80% of them are Malays.

The number of bumiputeras studying in the country’s 1,299 Chinese primary schools has risen to 18.52% in 2024, nearly doubling from 9.5% in 2010, figures from Malaysia’s Education Ministry showed. Bumiputeras refer to the Malays and indigenous ethnic groups from Sabah and Sarawak. Ethnic Indians in these Chinese-language primary schools rose to 2.75% of the total student population in 2020, against 1.67% 10 years ago.

I learnt Bahasa Indonesia when I stayed in Jakarta for a few years (and picked up badminton too). Grammar isn't complex. After all, it is the original lingua franca of the land we grew up in.
