As AI systems become more intelligent, the line is getting blurred between computers recommending a course of action and making actual decisions. Proponents suggest that it may be time for AI to take over medical care and consequently, also shoulder the liability of clinicians. This is at odds with the sentiments of most doctors, who postulate that apart from offering doctors a second opinion, AI must not have the final say concerning a patient’s treatment or medication. The human touch of clinicians, whom patients rely on for empathy, reassurance and counselling, is still as relevant today as when the practice of medicine became a profession.
