'More opposition in Parliament or lose a DPM?': Redditor says Gan Kim Yong's move to Punggol GRC similar to George Yeo's case

Source: The Straits Times

Author: Not specified

Publication Date: April 24, 2025

Article Summary:

Theme: This article reports on Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Gan Kim Yong's unexpected move to Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the upcoming General Election (GE2025). The article explores the public reaction, particularly the concerns raised on Reddit about the move's potential implications for the PAP and voters.

Core Points:

- DPM Gan's move to Punggol: DPM Gan, previously the anchor for Chua Chu Kang GRC, was fielded in Punggol GRC instead. This caused confusion and speculation among Singaporeans, as it was a last-minute change from his previously announced constituency.

- Concerns about the PAP's strategy: A Redditor questioned if the PAP was "that desperate" to field a DPM in a potentially contested GRC or if Gan was "disposable". They drew parallels with the 2011 election, where former Foreign Minister George Yeo was fielded in Aljunied GRC and lost to the Workers' Party (WP), subsequently losing his Cabinet position.

- Voters' tough choices: The Redditor argued that Punggol residents now face a choice between potentially increasing opposition representation in Parliament or risking the loss of a DPM.

- DPM Gan's response: DPM Gan clarified that the decision to move to Punggol was made carefully and with his full support. He thanked Chua Chu Kang residents for their support and assured them they are "in good hands" under Dr Tan See Leng. He expressed his commitment to serving Punggol residents wholeheartedly.

- PM Wong's explanation: PM Lawrence Wong stated that the PAP wanted a stronger distribution of senior leaders across constituencies, with Punggol requiring a "senior office-holder of similar stature" to replace Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is stepping down.

Phenomenon:

- Last-minute candidate switch: The article highlights the case of DPM Gan's unexpected move to Punggol GRC.

- Political strategy: The article discusses concerns about the PAP's strategy in fielding senior leaders in potentially contested constituencies, drawing comparisons to the 2011 election.

- Voters' choices: The article emphasizes the dilemma faced by voters in potentially contested GRCs, particularly in Punggol, where they must decide between potentially supporting opposition representation and risking the loss of a senior government leader.

Seems like a threat to the voters. If PaP loses Punggol, it loses a DPM. The Govt is telling you no more Heng SK which means PM Wong cannot work so you better vote for them.

On the hindsight, just do an emergency promotion of any 4G to replace DPM. That is easy like changing the race of President in her NRIC.

So far the WP mps have not done much in representing the constituents concerns in parLeement, doubt very much these new high flying candidates can do better. Simi Jamus, He Tingru etc, have they raised old hundred surnames concerns in parleement? Ony PSP is doing so. Please vote for those who are addressing our concerns without fear or favour. Oredy we have very few good ministars in LW's new cabinet, Putucheari is one [he happened to be the one who saved unconscious Heng Swee Keat with his advance CPR knowledge]. He oso happens to be a good MP. Forget about voting out Gan [who is steady if not stellar], we need to keep Putucheari for the sake of our country.

Pungol residents need to put thinking caps on b4 being swayed by the wrong reasons
