The Belitung Shipwreck and its Cargo

Discovery and Salvage: The shipwreck, an Arab dhow that sank around 830 AD, was discovered by fishermen off the coast of Belitung Island, Indonesia, in 1998. It was commercially salvaged by German treasure hunter Tilman Walterfang's company, Seabed Explorations, with permission from the Indonesian government.

The Treasure: The cargo is the largest single collection of Tang Dynasty artifacts ever found, comprising over 60,000 items, including mass-produced Changsha ceramics, rare intact cobalt-blue-and-white dishes (the earliest known), gold and silver objects, and spice jars.

Acquisition by Sentosa Leisure Group: In 2005, the entire collection was purchased for approximately US$32 million by the Sentosa Leisure Group (a Singapore government entity) and the Singapore government, with support from the estate of Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat. The condition of the sale was that the cargo remain intact as a single collection for study and public display, rather than being sold off piece by piece to private collectors.
