Rich in natural resources and bordering three continents, the Arctic is geopolitically significant. NATO wants to expand its military presence there - and the US wants to appoint a special envoy.

In the future, NATO wants to be more strongly represented in the North Pole region. 

The military alliance must "increase its presence in the Arctic," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Welt am Sonntag. He justified the planned move with increasing Russian military activities in the area.
