NATO has nuclear weapons at its disposal. Sweden is therefore outside the defense alliance. An application for membership means that the Swedish decision to say no to nuclear weapons must first be overturned.

NATO was founded after World War II in 1949 and now has 30 members. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the alliance has been expanded with several former eastern states that previously existed within the Warsaw Pact. It is the enlargement to the east that Russia's leader Vladimir Putin has as a basis when he demands that NATO not expand further.
